Breaux has decided to retire

Louisiana Sen. Breaux Won't Run Next Year
DAVID ESPO
Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. - Sen. John Breaux, a leading Democratic centrist and dealmaker during three terms in office, announced Monday he will not run for re-election next year.

Breaux, 59, becomes the fifth Southern Democrat in the Senate to step down in 2004, further compounding the party's difficulties in its struggle to retake control of the chamber.

"There comes a time in every career when it is time to step aside and let others step up. For my family and me, that time has arrived," a tearful Breaux said at a news conference......
---------

This reafirmes our need once again to nominate a democratic candidate who will be competative in the south. Now LA, in adition to AR, NC, SC, GA, and FL are the GOP's top targets. Presidential races almost always have spilloff/coattail effects.

Edwards or Clark

5. Or Clark as prez and Edwards as Attourney General
that way his justice reform proposals are likely to go through and we'll have a just, kind, super human being to replace the creepy Ashcroft.

7. He would be good there
Especially since he's been in the court system as an attorney for something like 20 years, he probably knows what is broken and what needs fixing.

2. Sad...
Breaux has had a long career. But, on the bright side, there goes another possible VP choice. Now we've got Edwards, Graham, Hollings, Byrd, and Breaux. Byrd would be a bad idea, the rest good.

3. The strongest ticket, I believe, by a huge margin, is Clark-Graham
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 05:50 PM by Bombtrack
Hollings and Byrd are way, way, too old, and in terms of Byrd, have way to much baggage

Think about this: Clarks ideal vp is someone who has governed, preferably a major state, as well as someone with Washington experience, particularly pertaining to the 9-11 aftermath, Graham, being someone who has served at every level of government practically, and just so happens to represent Bush's most crucial state to keep.
