Thinking Ahead to '08: Gore or Hillary? |
|
Lets just say that we lose in 08. It will be between Gore and Hillary. Someone involved with Hillary says she could win primaries over Gore. What do you think? Who would win a race for the nomination between Al and Hillary? Who would you vote for?

6. I think it's way too early to even speculate now . . . |
|
. . . because we have no idea what the big issues will be in 2008. I will say this, though -- neither one of these two is going to do well in 2008 unless they launch their campaign from a position other than the one they occupy now (Hillary in the U.S. Senate, Gore in a faculty position at NYU or Columbia).

First, Clinton has been a pretty bad Senator, voting for the Patriot Act and the IWR. Gore ... conceded when he actually won the presidency, not to mention his career-long pimping for NAFTA and other FTA type agreements.
Can't we do better than these medicore politicians?

26. Triangulation is a way to get elected. You don't have to govern that way |
|
It may not be popular with those wanting a pure progressive candidate, but it will give the best chance for her to win if she isn't able to be painted as a "left winger"... Remember the healthcare issue that she was demagogued on. If she can innoculate herself against criticism and get elected, I think she'll be far, far less likely to go to war than perhaps her IWR-vote critics imagine.
She's honing her credentials as a viable national candidate with a second Senate term and building an impressive war chest to try to win the WH.. Gore won't be a factor because he needs more relevance in '08 than just "I was VP 8 years ago". There are too many candidates in the wings to consider than Gore, regardless of the fact that he won the popular vote.

why should we speculate on what'll happen if we lose the general election before a signle vote has been cast in a primary.
I think it's about time you get over your Gore fixation… he ain't running.

(altho I'd have been a bit more diplomatic :) ). This thread is based on a negative presumption....that dems will lose in 04. All I can say is that if George Bush has another 4 years, there won't be an election to worry about in 08. I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous he and his compatriots are. We MUST get him out. And these damn dems beating up on each other are not helping.

himself too many times. His ego must look like Joan Rivers face it's been altered so many times. I don't see much hope for Gore.
Hilary, on the other hand, might do it. She does have a problem in that she truly inspires high passions in those that hate her. On the other hand, she inspires the same intensity of passion in those that love her.
In the end though, I think Hilary, however good a President she may be, will be a second place finisher in the general election.
I think we need to run, and win, on the issues, not the personality of the candidate.

21. Remember something about Gore . . . |
|
. . . it was he himself (and nobody else) who often publicly lamented about his inability to "be himself" during the 2000 campaign. In that respect, he sounds an awful lot like Kerry in 2003.
Nobody with full control of his faculties (no matter how bright they are) should ever feel the need to "show everyone what I'm REALLY like."
I agree with you about Hillary, though -- and this is why I think the battle between these two is really representative of the battle for the heart of the Democratic Party.

but he did not come across that way. He condescended. Nobody, evne the "dumbest" likes to be condescended to. IMO, this is why he didn't get enought votes to but the election out of stealing range. His public persona is wooden, he comes across insincere. God, he hired an advisor to tell him how to act like a man. Regardless of the rightness of his policies, this won't sell. Think of Al Gore as Aragorn. Disssonance, right?

15. If Dean is president, Gore is out. If Dean loses to Chimpy, Gore shares |
|
the blame for the loss.
With his premature endorsement of Dean, Mr. Gore thumbed his nose at the Democratic Party's political apparatus. He wants to "remake" the party. If Chimpy retains power because Gore's "bold vision" for the party falls flat on its face, the Democrats will "remake" Gore.
Come 2008, Al will be a seasoned tobacco farmer from Tennessee.

25. The thought has crossed my mind that the "astute" Mr. Gore, |
|
in the timing and tone of his endorsement, has opened the door to a great deal of infighting over the last couple of weeks.
Whatever political instincts he's had in the past, seem to be a bit rusty now.

27. The only way Gore is running in '08... |
|
...is if the Dems go against his endorsement and the non-Dean Dem candidate loses. There would be some major upheaval in the Democratic Party and Gore can position himself as the savior in that circumstance.

The presidency shouldn't be some kind of family heirloom to be handed down from family member to family member. At least in my mind, we won the Revolutionary War and got rid of monoarchy in this nation.
If it was just Gore vs. Hillary, I'd support Gore hands down. But I think that Sen. Landreiu may be the strongest challenger to Hillary. I hope she runs, I would support her.
It is possible for a Democrat to get elected next year. But I am not optimistic. W has a lot of money, a friendly media, and a solid base. A Democrat will have to run a perfect campaign to beat him. I pray that will happen, but I am not optimistic.

He really got burned in the last election. As for Hillary, she seems really happy as my senator. I would vote for either of them. I have heard that Hillary has much popular support. If she could win, I would vote for her.:-)
