Miss Essie Mae's name should be on that monument

I don't know how much of her praise of Strom is because he is her father, and I don't think it matters.

What does matter is exactly what Miss Essie said: There are too children of too many Carrie Butlers and Sally Hemmings who have been denied their place in history, and the acknowledgement of the heritage that is theirs by birthright.

Miss Essie has taught us all a lesson about family, and class, and dignity and self-respect.

I hope that the Thurmond children will demonstrate those same values and voluntarily take steps to ensure that Miss Essie receives an equal share of Strom's estate, and get her name up on that monumnent.

And may her courage in claiming what is hers inspire other secret children of secretive fathers to stand up and claim theirs.

I have no idea how Miss Essie is responding to the proposals for books, movies and mini-series that we all know she is being inundated with, but I hope that she will negotiate a good enough deal so that every one of her great-grandchildren can go to school wherever and for however long they wish to.
