Town Passes "God" Measure
http://www.oakridger.com/stories/121603/new_20031216030.shtml

The Clinton City Council approved the 'God resolution' Monday in a 5-1 vote, with one member abstaining.
Voting against the measure that publicly acknowledges God as the foundation of "our national heritage" was Council member Jerry Shattuck. Council member Pat Meredith abstained, saying in a phone interview today that her God is personal and that she did not think the resolution has any place in government.

Shattuck provided numerous reasons for the no-vote.

9. Ler's see
...abstaining said the whole thing should never have come up in the first place, and a "no" vote would be smeared as "voting against gawd almighty."

I think that's a no brainer.

2. a little narrow minded, don't you think? . . .
"Despite his opposition, Shattuck said he respected the sincerity of the people who supported the resolution.

"I want to assure you that my God is the Judeo Christian God also," he said. "But, He is not just God of this nation, but God of all the universe."

hmmm . . . so I guess this guy believes that the God of Islam is not legitimate? . . . or the Gods of the Hindus, Buddhists, Native Americans, Shintos, or any other religions? . . . I'm pretty sure that people who are not Jews or Christians would disagree with this guy's theology . . . including those that no doubt live right there in his community . . .

3. Its all about ...
"Them or Us". That is the only thing religion is good for (in any context). Identifying your enemy.

11. Why do you state the obvious?
Everybody knows that the Gods of Islam, Hindus, Buddhists, Native Americans, Shinto, and every other wrong religion is illegitimate.

Although one wonders why the god of this nation and all of the universe is so insecure that he needs pats on the back from some small-town city council. Nonetheless, I'm sure he feels much better about things today. There's nothing quite so reassuring for a god.

Does anyone else ever wonder why an ominscient being would have such problems with phraseology? The first commandment (which occupies a very prominent place in the US Constitution, doncha know) is, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

If you think about that, he should have needed say no more than, "I'm god, y'all."

But even he acknowledges that there are other gods. Which there were at the time, and they were in direct competition with the one followed by a small, nomadic herding group. Check it out: he was really worried about the other brands.

8. Exactly
I put that together when I was a kid. Right after I found out about Santa being a lie, it wasn't long after that I asked my parents whether God was a lie. They assured me he wasn't.

Religion is for loonies. Unfortunately there's enough of them that they seem sane to each other. Shared delusion is truth.

5. I don't understand why god would need a resolution, anyway.
Isn't he supposed to be all-powerful? If he is, let him speak for himself. That's what I don't get about my fundy family and surroundings. They're all for god, yippee, but for some reason they have to "channel" what god wants. Idiots.

Sorry, but this is my pet peeve, having been violated and abused early and often in the name of what god wants.

6. that's not who needs it
The ones who need the resolution are the ones who are desperate to tell you what to think, and what not to think.

It's worse than a pet peeve. It is a fundamentally anti-American gesture of consolidating power and isolating one's enemies. Don't forget the death threats to the guy who brought the lawsuit about "under God" in the pledge of allegiance, nor should you forget the refusal by authorities for years to investigate the murder of Madalyn Murray O'Hair. Atheists don't count in this culture, and once they're rounded up, you're next.

The sad part is that advocating for the principle of separation of church and state is currently considered far left, and pandering to the intolerant is "moderate."

10. An online friend is a Shi'a Muslim
...and he's quoted nearly the same thing from their sacred writing, that any god who depends on human flattery is no god at all.
