A letter to Sen. Durbin
Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 01:29 PM by steviet_2003
Please be gentle with me, this is my first post.

A thread (vanity re-post) posted this morning inspired me to write to my senator. I urge everyone else to do the same. Here is what I wrote (with some plagarism from the original post). Please feel free to cut and copy. Edit as need be, this was aimed at a good Republican Senator on the Intel committee who voted against the war. It may need severe editing if your Senator or rep is a repuke.

Dear Sen. Durbin,

As you are very well aware it has come to light that President Bush made a false statement in his State of the Union Address regarding Iraq trying to obtain uranium from Africa. I fully support your disclosure of the fact that they knew it ahead of time and your effort to debunk the myth that they said they did not. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The SOTUA was riddled with lies and misleading statements. The yellowcake gate is one but there was also the aluminum tubes and other WMD allegations made supporting their position that Iraq was an immediate threat that could not wait eight more weeks for the UN inspectors. Had we done so and still felt the need to invade we very well may have had the suport of the security council, had a real coalition and enjoyed their post-war support as well. (Although I personally believe Iraq posed no threat to us or anyone else, immediate or otherwise.)

Just as important as the misleading WMD statements, however, and maybe moreso, especially since 72% of our fellow Americans seem to still be misled, is the Iraq/Al Quaida connection pushed by the administration. Since the 911 report debunks all claims of Iraq/Al-Queda ties, and the administration knew this in December, but kept it under wraps for obvious reasons, the following is not just insinuation. This is a lie, meant to terrorize us into an unnecessary war.

"Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications and statements by people now in custody reveal that Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of Al Qaida."

It's just 26 words.

Why is this not making a stir? This is bald-faced lying.

In addition, it is a poorly hidden fact that the missing 28 pages from the 9/11 report dealing with foreign governments are all about Saudi Arabia's involvement. So, this report essentially says that we went after the wrong guys!! I find this totally outrageous and urge you to bring it to light as best you can legally. Being on the intelligence committee I am sure you know alot more than I about what the report contains. I seem to recall that the president had promised "get the guys who did this" and to go after "any nation that harbors or assists Al Quaida." Well, we are approaching two years after 9/11 and this administration has not done that yet.

While our intel and military has been focused upon Sadaam, Osama and his cronies have been regrouping. Our first line of defense, the firefighters and police, are being degredated by funding cuts and call ups to the Guard. Our ports are virtually unwatched and there is so much more here at home that we need to pay attention to rather than some toothless satrap in the middle east like Sadaam.

In short, in my opinion this administration has screwed the pooch on security issues from day one and I demand an investigation, the wool MUST be pulled from over the majority of the country's eyes. I know that getting an open, bi-partisan senate or house investigation past a republican controlled congress will not be an easy task to say nothing of an independent commission or special prosecutor but it must be tried. The start is to educate the public. First came yellowcakegate but it can't stop there. Next should be the Iraq/Al Quaida connection. It is unbelieveable to me that 72% of the country believes there is/was one. If that percentage can be knocked down you will find that the GOP in congress will be more willing to comply with delving further once their constituancy starts to demand it.

I thank you for all your good work. I am glad that you are my Senator, please keep it up!!

Sincerely,

(on edit, here's the link to the original thread that inspired me: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=92955&mesg_id=92955&page=)
