Bye- bye Directv.
I heard on the radio today that they've given approval (go figure) to Rupert Murdoch to purchase DirecTV. My one year contract runs out next month, and I'm cancelling it. I'll subscribe to a competitor. I don't know if we're allowed to pitch a product here, so I won't. There's only one other sattelite company anyway. Funny thing is, I had the competitor for 6 years, and was very happy with it, but Murdoch was trying to buy it a year ago, so when I moved, I switched.

Everybody should dump this scum-bag. I'm not giving him a penny of my money.

But I can't send Mr. Murdoch my $$$.

7. Bye Bye DirecTV..
I'm in the same boat here but I have Ultimate TV instead of Tivo. Some Tivo receivers will also work with cable and free TV. I just Googled and I'm going to check to see if my receivers will work with the Canadian System...

11. Campaign DISH for left-wing talk radio..petition?
They have a slew of audio channels, but no talk radio. I email them periodically asking them for a left-wing channel. They are polite in their responses, but I really think they need to hear from more people.

If I started one of those online petitions, would anyone else actually sign it? :)

4. There are other options
Edited on Mon Dec-22-03 08:01 PM by Newsjock
Again, I won't name names or give instructions, but it's possible for Americans to get their satellite TV from Canada, if you're willing to do a little work.

And, better yet, Fox News Channel is not allowed to be distributed on Canadian systems. (The actual reason is because a Canadian company holds rights to eventually develop a Canadian version of the channel, but the bottom line is that I never ever ever have to watch Bill O'Reilly.)

And I'll add: Having 24/7 access to BBC World and the full domestic version of CBC Newsworld are worth their weight in gold.

6. Looking for Options
Thanks Newsjock. I'm very much interested in the Canadian option since I don't want to go back to Adelphia Cable, another crook. I have four RCA Ultimate TV receivers that I would like to keep but will try selling them on ebay if I couldn't keep them with the Canadian system. Would it be possible for you to PM me a name or phone number..??? I would be forever indebted to you...Thanks..

13. Please Provide Info on Canadian Satellite
there's nothing in the DU rules that prevents you from talking about alternatives to Murdoch's media empire ...

I, like others, would be interested in knowing how to find out more about other satellite options ...

9. I went 12-years+ without any TV. Then I bought this mountain house.
Mrs. DemoTex said that we had to have TV here ... at least for weather. We got basic Direct-TV. We use it very little. But we have a one-year contract. Cannot cancel for a year. Bastards! At least they cannot change the terms of my service during that 12-month period, either.

16. THEY actually broke their commitment with you
by selling to a political zealot who will limit YOUR viewing choices..

If you lose stations that you had when you signed up, you might be able to press the issue and get out of your "contract"..

10. So, to make the switch,
I would have to buy and install another dish and receiver, and sign up with the new company. I'll have to look for a deal from DISH.

20. actually the changeover is free
Order through Free Speech TV and get a free install and support FSTV at the same time:

"Get Dish on up to 3 TVs and receive the equipment and installation for free!

Agree to a monthly programming package of $24.99 or higher for one year, and we'll give you a Dish with 1 or 2 receivers and a free installation!"
