Lieberman reiterated today......"This is a just war...."
Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 09:26 PM by Dover
Heard it on NPR this evening. If you had any lingering doubts about the Dem establishment's stance on the invasion of Iraq I suggest you go here
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=politicsNews&storyID=3172452
to read about Lieberman's statement today, and go to his statement back in March 2002 linked below which hasn't
changed.
These Dems were NOT duped into signing the War Resolution. Their eyes were wide open.

Lieberman's statement from March 2002
Don't Doubt Dems: They're Backing The War Effort

http://usinfo.state.gov/topical/pol/terror/02030707.htm

The nonpartisan issue that should be front and center in the political debates is our foreign policy which allows for the unprovoked invasion and seizure of other weaker countries and their resources. We are inaccurately calling this policy our war on "terrorism" but that is completely hypocritical when we have
become the terrorists preying on others. And the irony is that these policies have bred "terrorism" within the islamic world.

How do you feel about this policy? Would you elect someone who endorsed it?

I also recommend you check out my other post today regarding Terry Gross's interview of the author of All The Shah's Men for a better understanding of how this policy got its start.

2. RNC team leader mail features Joe's 7/29 Today Show just war
Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 09:16 PM by papau
Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT): "I am also troubled with members of my own party..."

"...most of whom in Congress and in fact throughout the country supported the war against Saddam, who now seem to be raising so many questions that they are leaving the impression that they don't think this was a just war. I want to come back and restate that case because I am convinced it was." (Sen. Joe Lieberman, NBC's "Today," 7/28/03)

On edit :
I should have noted the RNC also quoted:

Dean from 1/20/03 saying : "'All these guys running say how terrible Iraq is,' Dean told Iowa voters " 'Where were they four months ago when we really needed them to stand up to the president of the United States?'" (Jeff Zeleny, "Potential For War Troubles Field Of Democratic Hopefuls," Chicago Tribune, 1/20/03)

Graham from 7/20/03: To Boost Faltering Campaign, Candidate Graham Abandons Senator Graham's Promise Not To Politicize 9/11 Report
"here are significant portions of the report which have been classified, meaning that they will not be available to the American people. I--I think in many of those most important sections, the classification had more to do with the agencies wishing to avoid embarrassment by the disclosure of their actions or inactions rather than the protection of some national security interests." (CBS News' "Face The Nation," 7/20/03)

A nasty comment on Gephardt saying what he does not believe - per GOP : "Buckling Under Pressure From Fellow Democrat Presidential Candidates, Gephardt Criticizes President Bush On Iraq And War On Terror "Even he's cracked. I mean, this was a crack like when he ran for president the first time, when he flipped his vote on abortion, a moral issue. "He says things I don't think he believes. He said in here, 'I believe George Bush has made us less safe and less secure than we were four years ago.' He can't believe that. I mean, Al Qaeda is dispersed, Saddam..."

and a nasty comment on how dare the Dems be critical of Bush on Homeland Security funding: "Dems See Political Opportunity on Homeland Security... They Shouldn't! President Bush Has Provided Unprecedented Funding For Homeland Defense "The Democratic candidates' challenge to Bush's stand on homeland security - comes as their party is struggling to raise public doubts about Bush's ability to protect American security." (Steven Thomma, "Bush Criticized On Homeland," The Philadelphia Inquirer, 3/19/03)

3. I have been of the opinion that there are persons not worth voting
for whether they have a "D" to their name or not. LIEberman is one of them.

4. bah!
A vote for Lieberman is a vote for a closet Republican. In all of the interviews I've seen, he seems like a funny, likeable guy. That being said, he's the most right-wing Democrat since Colin Powell. I'm not sure how to take hime, really. All I know is that, in the Democratic primary, he'll be on the bottom of MY list.

Good guy, bad Democrat.

God only knows what it is. Seems like he's writting off the left wing of the democratic party. He can't win . . . repeat . . . can't win without the left.

10. Not anti-jewish, but
isn't it easy to see that Lieberman would be obviously for any war that weakens Israels enemies? Why would this be difficult to understand?

11. In all honesty...who cares?
Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 10:03 PM by Dob Bole
I mean, who gives a single damn? Lieberman is one guy. I'm sure his, vote would have sent the Iraq war spiraling to its death, just like Bob Graham's vote did. The Orthodox Jewish belief IS that there are just and unjust wars, because Jewish people don't have the precedent that some Christians have for pacifism. The scriptures are different. And while I can say that I don't agree with him on this issue, I would still respect him as a fellow Democrat (and our true current VP for that matter.) So I wouldn't care if his name were Zell Lieberman. Life is more than protecting the perfect, sacred ideology.

aren't liberals the ones who should be pretty accepting of people's differences, anyway? At least that's what I thought it was.

14. Is it possible Lieberman may be doing us a favor but doesn't realize it ?
He can always say that a good proportion of our Party was for the war - no matter if Bush and the media try to run on the "war ticket"? The Repubs will not be able to say that the Dems to a person were "anti-war". Although he looks like a snake at this time, his position may look better come election time, politically speaking. And we can discuss the morality, justness, rightness of the cause but there is also a political reality we might have to deal with? Personally, I wish our entire Party would come out against this travesty of a war but since we are holding a bag of lemons....
