DUers, let's have those State of the Union speech predictions!
Something's brewin' up in Crawford, yall can bet it. Bush is in the middle of repositioning himself in the political center for his recoronation. What's it gonna be? According to the NY Times, it's gonna be something big and nonpartisan, like a new moon shot or a Mars shot (Houston, the Beagle has landed?) or a Bartlettesque goal like extending life expectancy.

"They want to have the president talk about an important national goal that is big and a unifying theme."

So what do you think it'll be? I think it will be education-related and highly populist, like a college-or-tech-school-for-everyone program. It's one of his biggest weak spots and it'll certainly play in Peoria.

2. The "Ownership Society" -- already being written about
http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2003/12/24/bushs_ownership_scam/

IN PRESIDENT Bush's upcoming State of the Union address, we will hear a lot about something called an "ownership society." The idea is that American workers aspire to be owners -- of stock for their retirement, homes, businesses, good health insurance, and skills they need to navigate multiple changes of jobs and careers. It sounds just great.

Take a closer look, however, and you will recognize the trademarked Bush combination of inspiring themes coupled with an absence of useful tools. In other words, bait and switch.

3. Well I don't know about a big sexy national agenda
but I can say I've noticed that by the election the Rove team will probably have attempted a moral take-over and re-definition of all the terms of every possible liberal issue or criticism.

If they still think they can get away with it, I expect some kind of Clark/Kennedyesque vision of a Utopian, sub-urban Amerika where everyone has the same opportunity to own a business and provide jobs, revenue and services to their own communities.

American's are strong, tough and smart! If you're not an owner, you're slacker!!!!

4. "Saddam and 9/11, Saddam and 9/11, Saddam and 9/11"
Edited on Fri Dec-26-03 07:56 PM by freesqueeze
Then he'll follow that up with some more,

"Saddam and 9/11, Saddam and 9/11, Saddam and 9/11, Saddam and 9/11, Saddam and 9/11, Saddam and 9/11"

Any prize for the one who gets it right?

Glad I got this one in first!

16. That may be the best prediction so far, but...
He's running out of taxes to cut. The way they'll need to go with tax rates so low anyway is to ask for tax break incentives for economic development--targeted tax incentives. I know that's a Democratic idea, but it's a great way to corner any Democrats on the tax issue. We can't exactly oppose targeted tax incentives since we've been promoting those for 15 years. But any support for them after the SOTU address will smell like "me-tooism".
