Bush's Sec. of Agriculture Veneman received Mad Cow warning 6 weeks ago
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/12/25/national/25WARN.html

<snip>Ever since he identified the cause of mad cow disease, Dr. Stanley Prusiner has worried about whether the meat supply in America is safe.

In May, a case of mad cow disease appeared in Canada, and he quickly sought a meeting with Ann M. Veneman, the secretary of agriculture.

He was rebuffed, he said in an interview yesterday, until he ran into Karl Rove.

So six weeks ago, Dr. Prusiner, who won the 1997 Nobel Prize in Medicine, entered Veneman's office with a message.

“I went to tell her that what happened in Canada was going to
happen in the United States. I told her it was just a matter of time.”

The department had been willfully blind to the threat, he said... Veneman's response (he said she did not share his sense of urgency) left him frustrated. That frustration soared this week after a cow in Washington State was tentatively found to have the disease. If the nation had increased testing and inspections, meat from that cow might never have entered the food chain, he said.

1. How could she "not feel a sense of urgency?"
One who grew up on a cattle farm speaking.

4. Republicans do not see consequences.
Just as it never occurs to them that emptying our treasury or polluting our air and water will change anything.

They thought the Iraqis would cheer our entry into their country because they had seen old World War II movies and the French cheered. (I am halfway convinced that the New Animosity toward the French is because Republicans now feel the French deceived them thru the medium of old cinema and caused this entire mess.)

7. That is because people think that because
if you don't get sick in a week or less, the meat was OK. There is a total disconnect between what one does now and something that will happen (or not) years in the future. Look at smokers, same thing.

8. But how many people would give cigarettes to their kids?
Not many. But they won't hesitate to feed them burgers that could kill them in a few years. Whats the matter with this picture?

11. The meat is probably real cheap right now.
The cattle industry has nothing to worry about. There will always be a significant number of suckers to keep them in business.

13. Why now?
Edited on Mon Dec-29-03 08:59 PM by preciousdove
The Lyme Disease Community has protested, written, lobbied, PRed, begged and cried with death certificates in hand to try to get the disease taken seriously and out of the hands of incompetent government gatekeepers and university and private researchers since 1993. Instead the government set up an agency ALDF to "handle" us pesky patients and handle "Lyme Disease". A survivor of those days Pat Smith has been steadily growing the Lyme Disease Association and had been asking to meet with HHS people about the situation. Suddenly about 6 weeks ago she had a request for an informational meeting that turned out to be attended by 75 top level people and Tommy Thompson himself. Why now? Were they shopping for the next boogy man to pull out for population control? Were they planning to string us and others along past the next election?. Did what the government policy toward LD started under Bush appointees in the early 1990's suddenly grow a conscience, a sense of purpose? Stay tuned. We may all know soon or not.
