Bumper Sticker Reactions
Put some new bumper stickers on this weekend for my weekly long drive to the "cabin".
This week's selections were:

"Bush Lied, Soldiers Died" and "Support Our Troops - Dump Bush"

Wow! The reactions are great! Lots of honks and thumbs ups - a few
fist shakings and thumbs down.

I fasten them to the trunk of my car with "blu-tack" so that I can
change them each time.

My thought was that this is nearly the equivalent of taking out a
billboard with my message - driving on crowded highways on the weekend spreading my message of Bush lies.

I think we should all invest in them. It really does provoke reaction - at least for me.

1. Great job!
I wish I had the nerve to do that, but I've had some bad experiences on the road in the past when I've had political bumperstickers on my vehicles. My dh's policy now is NO BUMPER STICKERS OF ANY KIND. Kinda boring, if you ask me.

As for the people who gave you the thumbs-down, I'd sure like them to prove your bumper stickers wrong. Prove that Bush didn't lie. Prove that people haven't died because of those lies. Prove that Bush is doing anything to support the troops. They can't!!

Keep up the good work!

2. Great idea
Is it possible to get them in less than two weeks? I have a long trip coming up and I'd love to piss off the tattered flag fliers.

and you could probably get rush delivery. I ordered about 12 of them in different varieties - my kids put them on their cars too. We
all rotate them. Once a man stopped me and asked where he could get on of those "Bush Lied" stickers. I gave him one of mine! It was
awesome.

Mine came in about a week using regular delivery. I'm anxiously awaiting my new "Anyone But Bush" bumper stickers.

10. Some sites for stickers
Try http://irregulartimes.com/exprogressive.html -- they are up to 326 designs so far. (It's a cafe express store)

I get sheets of magnetic material from northernsun.com

4. I do the same thing on my truck...
...with "Power Point" signs and tape. I agree, teh reactions can be quite interesting. I was surprised how many positive reactions I got during my visit to Va Beach / Norfolk. Lots of military people we very positive about them.

6. I have another method as well
I went to a sign making company in town and had them cut up a square foot of their magnetic material (that you use for magnetic signs you can put on the side of your vehicle - normally for advertising a business) into slightly larger than bumper sticker sizes. That way, I can throw them in the trunk when I park, and no freeper has an easy target to vandalize.

9. I've gone a bit overboard with the bumper stickers....
but I think it's just because I work with die-hard B*sh fans all day and it puts my teeth on edge, so I have to vent somehow... (The boss told me the other day that he "really admire Don Rumsfeld, he's a great guy doing a hell of a job". Put me off my food for a while.

I mount all my bumper stickers on magnetic sheets so I can swap them around as needed. Let's see if I can remember the whole list that's out there now....

* Congress passed huge tax cuts for the rich and all I got is this lousy bumper sticker

* Memo to George Bush: Lying to the American people restores neither honor or integrity

* Impeach Bush

* Help, help, I'm being repressed! Dump Bush in 2004

* Americans killed: hundreds. Iraqi civilians killed: thousands. Iraqi soldiers killed: tens of thousands. WMDs found: Zero

* Where are the WMDs? Call George at 202-456-1111

* Regime change starts at home

* Anyone but Bush 2004

* Milosovic, Fujimori, Bush: Pioneers in electoral innovation

* We didn't elect him, we don't have to keep him

* Another day, another dead soldier. Dump Bush in 2004

* Hey George -- tax cuts don't matter when you don't have a job!

* Ignorance is expensive -- just look at the debt that George Bush is leaving our children!

* Bush surplus: $0. Bush Deficit: $400,000,000,000.00 Dumping Bush in 2004: Priceless

I think there are a few more, but I can't recall at the moment. I'll have to get a picture of it to post one of these days (hmmm.... an excuse to buy that digital camera I've wanted.....) Responses have generally been good - I've gotten quite a few compliments from folks in person.

One weekend I had taken all the stickers off to wash the truck and forgot to put them back on before work on Monday. When I left work, someone had left a note on my windshield that said: "What happened to your bumper stickers? I think they're great! I have a few on my car, but they don't hold a candle to yours. It's such a relief to see your truck among a sea of flags..." She even signed her name and indicated which car was hers, so I wrote back thanking her for making my day and left it on her car...

11. Here's a question:
Does a bumpersticker ever change anyone's mind? Or do they just preach to the choir?

Not that rallying "our side" is a bad thing; I just wonder if there's any other point to a bumpersticker.

15. What's your own reaction?
When you see a "Bush lied" bumpersticker, or some other bumpersticker that you agree with, does it make you feel sad that someone took the time and bumper space to preach to you, since you already agree with the sentiment and need no encouragement? Or does it bolster your opinion, knowing that there are others who think like you do?

Or, on subjects on which you don't have an opinion, does a bumper sticker stimulate you to think about the subject, or do you figure that the person is just preaching to other like-minded citizens? Or preaching just to those citizens who think like the driver, wasting valuable bumper space?

17. Certainly bolsters my opnions,
...and often makes me go "wow, and here I thought I lived in GOP-land, look, another dissenter..." Which is valuable, sure.

But I know when I see, for example, anti-choice bumperstickers, I don't find myself thinking "Hm, maybe that guy has a point". If the value of stickers is a camaraderie sort of thing, they're working. But I don't think anyone's mind was ever changed by a bumpersticker; too sound-bite-ish, I believe.

"Valuable bumper space"? :)

19. Makes my day completely!
I've been seeing a few more "Dump Bush"-type signs. Once, on the freeway, even saw what looked like a hand-printed sign: Dump Bush - Impeach the American Caligula.

See more than a few Kucinich bumper stickers out here, too.

My kids and I have taken to calling out when we see "Peace is Patriotic" or some such peace sign or one like mine - "War is Not the Answer" - which remains in my back window.

See 'em on the freeway and when/if we make eye contact, we smile at each other.

Edited on Tue Jul-29-03 10:53 AM by Mari333
My bumper stickers stand out....and I havent really gotten any bad looks yet...maybe one...otherwise, people look puzzled..
RICH MANS WAR POOR MANS BLOOD
PEACE IS PATRIOTIC
WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER
SUPPORT THE TROOPS BRING THEM HOME
This is a poor community...perhaps people are waking up to the fact that only POOR soldiers are being killed, instead of the wealthy frat boys of the Congressional parents who make the policies..

edit to add: Just ordered a new LISENCE PLATE

SAYS:

GW LIED

Im surprised the state allowed it. :bounce:

27. 2 things
1. I want people to know people like me exist. I hear some poll results and it's really frustrating. I know I'm not alone. And I want others like me to know they aren't alone. Nope I don't expect to change anybodies opinion. For those who've chosen not to care, if I make them think so much the better but I don't even really expect that.

2. Candidate Name Recognition (alot of folks don't even know the D candidates)
