The Four Critical Issues
Given the enormity of what happened on 9/11, it is imperative that any serious investigation focus relentlessly on four (4) key issues, which must be integrated into any final “report” according to both time lines and findings
of fact.
Foreknowledge
What did senior members of the Bush administration know, and when did they know it?
What, if anything, did they do in response to warnings of an Al Qaeda attack on U.S. soil?
If they took action, why were their decisions and policies not effective in protecting Americans from the carnage?
If they failed to take action, why? Who is responsible?
Stand-Down
In light of the administration’s comprehensive & nearly incomprehensible failure to defend against the attacks, both before and during the events of 9/11, is it possible that a “stand-down” order prevented any suitable and successful response, such as scrambling U.S. fighter jets to shoot down the hijacked planes?
If such a “stand-down” existed, was it as a result of the Project for a New American Century report, circulated in late 2000, that cited the need for a “Pearl Harbor”-like attack to rally the American people to necessary wars with Afghanistan and Iraq?
Accountability
Who was ultimately responsible, at the various levels of government and the military, for the failures of 9/11? Why has no one been held accountable? What were the pivotal decisions and actions – or lack thereof – that led to the disaster?
Obstruction of Investigations
Why has the Bush administration consistently failed to support proper investigation of the events of September 11th?
What are they hiding and why?
The American people have a right to see and assess all available evidence in order to draw their own conclusions.
The Big Questions
Of the many questions that have been raised by amateur sleuths and seasoned conspiracy theorists around the world, there are but a few that are critical enough to any informed inquiry that they alone can help resolve much of the mystery of 9/11.
Because of the apparent “complexity” of what transpired on September 11th, the most direct and insidious questions have mutated into a myriad of unanswered questions, all worthy of official explanation in a spirit of national closure.
However, for any inquiry to be effective, it must be focused. These are the “major” questions that should be at the heart of any serious inquiry conducted on behalf of the American people and the world.
What did the President know and when did he know it?
Initially, the President and his top aides categorically denied any foreknowledge of a terrorist attack using hijacked planes.
Specifically, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice went on record as saying: “no one could have predicted that they would use a…hijacked airplane as a missile.” In light of official government reports and detailed warnings from foreign governments and our own FBI and CIA, one Republican member of the 9/11 Commission has dubbed Rice’s comment “unfortunate.”
What did Dr. Rice tell President Bush on August 6, 2001 about Al Qaeda threats against the United States?
In a still-secret daily briefing prepared by the CIA and delivered by Dr. Rice, specific details of an imminent attack on the U.S. were discussed. What was done by the President, by Dr. Rice, by others, as a direct result of those discussions?
The White House now says it issued threat warnings to “the aviation industry.” Why were those threats not revealed to the American people? Why was nothing else done? Who should be held accountable for the failure that cost almost 3,000 American lives?
The August 6 briefing memo, which the White House is refusing to release based on a claim of executive privilege, is “the smoking gun” of any 9/11
investigation. It is the 9/11 equivalent of Nixon’s Watergate tapes.
It must be taken as seriously.
Please demand that your Congressman and Senators demand release of the document to the 9/11 Commission for its January 2004 hearings. It is the only way we can know what George W. Bush knew – and when.
The American people, and the press, must demand that information – and then check it against the facts.
Given that there had been so many warnings, how is it possible that NORAD air defenses failed on the massive scale that they did?
For decades, it has been strict U.S. defense policy that fighter jets scramble within minutes to address any stray or unaccounted for aircraft in U.S. airspace.
There are any number of instances on the public record when jets were dispatched to monitor errant private aircraft.
Why did the system fail so completely on September 11th? Who is responsible for the fact that none of the four hijacked planes were intercepted by U.S. fighters? Why has that person not been held accountable and publicly identified? Why has there been no official investigation of what happened?
Any fair and reasonable inquiry into these questions seems to indicate that a “stand-down” policy had been implemented in a way that prevented a proper and effective response to the attacks.
Who made a small fortune “shorting” airline and insurance stocks before 9/11?
“On September 10, the trading ratio on United Airlines stock was 25 times greater than normal at the Pacific Exchange,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on September 11, 2003. Much of the business was in “puts,” meaning the investor was betting the stock would soon decline in value. That’s precisely what happened to both United and American Airlines after the tracks.
Yet, despite the high-tech capabilities of the SEC and other government agencies in tracking money in the transnational world of cyber-space and offshore banking havens, neither the traders nor the funds have been accounted for.
Why not?
What’s in the 28 pages of “redacted” material from last summer’s Congressional 9/11 report?
Along with the first question (“What did the President know and when did he know it?”), this is the other half of “the smoking gun” of 9/11.
The information was redacted at the direct request of the White House.
So far, leaks to the press have indicated that the blacked-out pages detail the complicity of Saudi Arabia – the world’s #1 financier of state-funded terrorism – in the conspiracy that led to September 11th.
If so, why would the Bush administration intentionally cover up that information?
Once again, the answer in simple – and very troubling.
It is a fact that the Bush family – both George W. Bush and his father – have done business with the Saudis and the bin Ladens since the 1970s, when Salem bin Laden, deceased brother of Osama bin Laden, secretly invested in George W. Bush’s fledgling oil business via a Houston middleman named James Bath.
Since leaving the White House in 1992, George H.W. Bush has done billions of dollars in business with the Saudis via the top-secret Carlyle Group, for which Bush is a “paid adviser.”
With his son in the White House, and the Saudis as the top suspects for “institutional” responsibility for 9/11, that seems to constitute an unprecedented “conflict of interests” – for both the sitting President and the ex-President.
If the Saudis were, in fact, largely responsible for 9/11, and it is proven that George W. Bush blocked an investigation to protect his family’s secretive business dealings with the Saudi regime, would that rise to a standard of treason?
This is the ultimate question that must be addressed and answered, based on factual evidence and sworn testimony, if the events of September 11th are to be put behind us.
The American people have a right to know the answers to these and many other related questions.
Under the best-case scenario, the Bush administration failed miserably and massively in its primary Constitutional responsibility of protecting the American people. Even under that standard, those most directly responsible for the failure should be held accountable.
Under the worst-case scenario, the Bush administration is guilty of treason in its complicity in the murder of nearly three thousand innocent civilians as a result of its unholy alliance with the West-hating Wahhabis of Saudi Arabia, the Bush family patron state.

MY POSITIONS ON KEY ISSUES
I will end the corporate stranglehold on government and politics.
I will remove the corporate influence from American politics by making it illegal for corporate/business entities to contribute to candidates or political parties.
I will outlaw political action committees (PACs).
I will make it illegal for any corporation or business entity to in any way influence or promote the vote of any employee or induce involvement in any political or social cause.
I will outlaw professional lobbying.
I will end war profiteering by former government officials and Washington insiders.
I will require that all U.S. defense contractors adhere to a strict new policy of financial transparency, monitored on behalf of the American people by a new Congressional subcommittee in both the House and Senate, which release public reports audited by the Government Accounting Office (GAO).
I will make it illegal for former high government officials to participate in defense-related for-profit businesses.
I will create a Citizens Defense Oversight Board, to consist of defense and aerospace CEOs, trade journalists, academicians, scientists, and private citizens representing the full spectrum of U.S. society.
I will hold corporations accountable for their actions.
Corporations have no Constitutional rights, only citizens do. Nevertheless, the public trust is regularly and seriously compromised when corporate interests supercede the interests of the people. As a result, I will introduce new measures to hold corporations accountable to their public charter.
Corporations that violate the interests of the public will be prosecuted, in the name of the American people, by the U.S. Department of Commerce – and could face revocation of their corporate charter by voter referendum.
I will strengthen existing regulatory agencies such as the Securities & Exchange Commission and Federal Communications Commission and develop new initiatives to protect consumer rights.
I will reform the media.
I will reinstate the FCC Fairness Doctrine, mandating that “fair and balanced reporting” be a daily reality on the public airwaves, not a trademarked slogan.
I will roll back the new FCC rules easing ownership by global conglomerates of the entire U.S. media, and institute new policies to promote broader and more localized media ownership in the interests of free speech and vigorous public debate on the issues.
I will create a new “local hour” of required community broadcasting by all network affiliates and independent TV/radio stations.
I will require the media to better serve their public responsibility by regularly airing programming analyzing and covering difficult social issues such as racism, anti-Semitism, religious tensions, and class divisions.
I will create a Citizens Media Oversight Board, nationally and locally, to represent the interests of the public in the making and management of all media policy. The board will consist of journalists, news and media executives, journalism professors, media historians, and an equal number of citizen representatives from the full spectrum of U.S. society.
I will make the FCC charter renewal process for TV and radio stations more directly accountable to the communities they serve.
I will restore government to the American people and take it away from special interests.
I will create new voter registration drives designed to dramatically increase voter participation in all elections as a basic civic duty, particularly among young people 18-25.
I will create a new $2,000 tax penalty for citizens who do not vote. I will create a new tax credit of $2,000 for anyone involved as a volunteer or candidate in the political process.
I will encourage more candidacies, at all levels of government, from among “common citizens,” including women and minorities.
I will create a new program for the public financing of national elections so that campaigns can be conducted free of corporate or institutional influence or financing and be open to good ideas rather than huge bank balances.
I will encourage all states and localities to do the same.
I will shift the financing of the U.S. government from the middle class to the corporations and wealthy individuals who presently pay little or no taxes.
I will aggressively enforce the U.S. tax code and enforce compliance by both corporations and rich individuals.
I will create a new “wealth tax” so that the super-rich pay their fair share toward the general good of society so new ideas and initiatives can be funded by a new revenue stream for the U.S. Treasury.
I will ease and simplify the tax burden of the middle class and increase the “floor” for minimum taxation to bring more struggling families above the poverty line.
Corporations and other business entities who do not pay their fair share of taxes will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
ADDITIONAL POSITIONS ON ISSUES
On National Security & Defense
Reverse “The Bush Doctrine” of “pre-emptive” military action and use unilateral force only in the most serious of national emergencies.
Focus on Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda, not sovereign countries that pose no threat to the U.S.
Use military force only in response to legitimate and imminent threats against the national security of the United States, but only as a last resort after consultation with the UN Security Council and major U.S. allies.
Develop a “peace-keeping” mission under the auspices of the UN, with comprehensive international support, including genuine commitments to troop rotations and logistical support by all UN member states, under the authority of the Security Council.
Create an annual “World Peace Conference” under the banner of the UN, with participation by all member states.
Cut the defense budget by one per cent (1%) per year, or by about $4 billion, and dramatically increase funding of the UN, which presently operates for one year on what the Pentagon spends every 32 days (about $1.2 billion).
On Constitutional Freedoms & Civil Liberties
Rescind The Patriot Act.
Create an ongoing national policy, with widespread public participation and observation by civil liberty groups, for the comprehensive restoration and protection of Constitutional rights and civil liberties in the post-9/11 environment.
Extend full legal protections to U.S. citizens such as Jose Padilla who are accused of being “enemy combatants” and detained secretly and indefinitely without probable cause or due process.
Extend full legal protections, including international representation such as diplomatic entities, to all accused terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Set a deadline for either charging them and trying them in proper U.S. courts, or release them.
Strongly protect Second Amendment rights for all Americans. Guns are not a problem. Criminals are a problem. Fair and intelligent policy must address that reality.
Protect a woman’s reproductive rights, including the right to abortion.
On Taxation & Government Spending
Cut the federal budget by five per cent (5%) per year in a serious effort toward smaller government and a shrinking federal bureaucracy.
Achieve a balanced budget.
Stabilize and improve both Social Security and Medicare as sacred, inviolable government trusts for future generations,
with serious problems that must be repaired by this generation.
Shift the tax burden from the middle class to the wealthy and corporations by significantly reducing taxation on the middle class.
Simplify the tax code.
Tax dividends and capital gains as regular income.
Strengthen the safety net for those living beneath the poverty line and social services, such as day care and safe transportation, for working families.
