An amazing thing happened today.

2. Not to sound like an ignorant midwesterner or anything
(Please, no jokes!), but what, exactly, is the "Harvey Milk High School" issue? I know who Harvey Milk was, and what happened to him, but I don't know this particular issue.

4. It's a high school in NYC
primarily for gay/lesbian students who find too much harrassment in regular high school.

the thread turned into a flamefest for most of the day.

7. It's a GLBT high school in NY
See this link for the flame-fest:

DarkPhenyx, I saw your position in this thread, I tend to agree, and I'm gay. IMO money would be better spent on encouraging gay-straight alliances, sensitivity training etc. in all high schools.

6. Oh, I know there are. Which is a good thing.
The point would be that several individuals last night were trying to pretend that any opinion that didn't agree with their position had to be wrong and therfore had to be from somone that was not GLBT in orientation.

it's kind of old news actually.

We just do it quieter and with some class.

Gays and lesbians are not monolothic in their opinions and are as multi-faceted as you! :eyes:

10. I've always know that.
Otehr people do not know that. Just as certain people don't know that Liberals are not monolithic. That includes many Liberals.

11. I just dont understand...
I just dont understand why this is being paid for by public funding. Why would the government (city or whomever is funding it) be funding and supporting open segregation of students? I really dont care if homosexuals want their own school, but I dont see why I should help fund segregation and instead teach tolerance and acceptance of those different from other students.

If anyone wanted to open a heterosexual school, everyone would be up in arms and crying "Discrimination!" Think about it.

12. Which is a question I had earlier yesterday.

Never got an answer to it either. It was also my primary argument against this idea.

13. Several years ago, in my area
(I live in Ohio) a 15-year-old boy shot himself in the head because he just could not take any more beatings, bashings, and persecution from his fellow classmates for the horrendous, heinous, unthinkable (sarcasm, of course) crime of being gay. He was an honors student with his whole life ahead of him who had "stood up and fought" for years against his classmate's torment. After he was buried, a couple of his classmates made the incredibly sensitive and sympathetic comment that that was "one less fag we have to deal with now." So maybe you'd like to tell his mother that he should have "stood up and fought" just a little more?

I'm hetero, and it never fails to amaze me just how hatefully homophobic most people really are. I've seen what my gay friends go through and have gone through, and it's hard enough for them as adults!

16. sad isnt it
Poor kid about my age just think. I am not gay but I see how gays are viewed by the majority of kids it aint pretty I admit I was a little bigoted a long time ago but I envolved this was when I was in elementary and immature so please dont flame me I was just a dumb kid but I am wiser and mature now. I support gay marriage now. Homophobia and Athiesm I have said here are the last frotier in many ways here in America of discrimination. Its hard being a teen it must be hell being a gay teen because of homophobia I am must admit I really am afraid of starting like a gay-straight alliance at my school.
