1. When I had mine out
- And they were badly impacted and really complicated, -

everything went fine.

There was a little bit of nerve damage, which almost completely disappeared after about 4 months (there's a spot on my lip I can't quite feel anything, but every thing else is fine)

3. I have nightmares....
of nerve damage and drooling cause I lose feeling in my mouth...glad it wasn't that bad...I'll be more than willing to take pain killers for mouth pain...

How long did it take for you to "heal"...

I got a Dean rally (he's gonna be on conference call to our state "parties") 2 days after I get them out!!

7. 2 days would be pretty fast healing...
You'll probably only really be out of commission the day of the procedure, but it might be sort of uncomfortable for a few days if you have lots of swelling. (I only swelled up on the left side...my little brothers said I looked like a demented squirrel!) But, a couple of painkillers should get you through the rally. :-)

2. No! Just something I went through when I was living on Kauai
about 7 years ago! Just on my right side ...I don't know if I still have the left to look forward to or not!

I never take pain pills except for teeth pain! :-(

Good Luck! :-)

4. Had mine out when I was 16
Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 05:37 PM by Piltdown13
They were going to ruin thousands of $$ worth of orthodontia, so out they came! I wouldn't say it was a pleasant experience, but not nearly as bad as I had built it up in my mind beforehand. They gave me a Valium to take before leaving for the endodontist's office, and then I had an I.V. sedative during the procedure (it was that or general anesthesia at the hospital...no, thanks!). Don't remember any of the procedure; under this type of sedation you're never technically unconscious (I suppose; after all, it *is* done in the dentist's office). They had to break mine into pieces to get them out, and even so, I only had to take the prescribed pain medication for one day -- it turned me into a drooling zombie, and Aleve worked almost as well. No lingering effects, either. :-) The only slightly scary thing was that I still had no feeling in my lower lip about 10 hours after the procedure, and I was flipping out (when I had a soft tissue graft in my mouth, the Novocaine wore off within a couple hours) -- but it turns out it was normal; they used a much stronger local anesthetic than I was used to.

Good luck!

On edit: I had stitches because mine were so far from the surface at the time...it was about a week later that I went back to the dentist to have them removed. By then I'd been eating totally normally for a few days...YMMV, of course.

10. I got some drugs I'm gonna get.....
get laughing gas to relax me, then a valium concoction in the IV (for that waking sleep, or whatever), and the novacaine shots all over my mouth (have had those before and they worked well)...then they said they give me like 3 pills for the pain...

I'm gonna be getting dissolvable stitches apparently....

Still, I got a small mouth...I dont know how they are even gonna fit a drill in there!!

12. Those dissolvable stiches will be great!
Mine obviously weren't, and I healed so fast that they mostly didn't come out on their own like they're supposed to...the dentist chastised me for "not chewing enough back there" although I sure had been!

I had that same thought when I saw their instruments...I guess maybe your mouth opens wider when you're in that "waking sleep" :-). That was the funky part of the whole thing -- when the IV started flowing, I started hallucinating! At least until I closed my eyes and the amnesia part kicked in, anyhow.

5. Don't worry, be happy
I had all four removed over a few years - one, then the other, then two at once. Mine were all pretty bearable and even the more difficult (they had to chop one up into pieces to get it out) were fairly straightforward, with minimal post-op pain and bleeding. Not bad, anyway.

Of course, I'm none the wiser for it.

6. It's a great time to stop smoking
Prep some edible food beforehand, hope you like mashed potatoes.

Rent some movies before you get the surgery done.

The most painful part to me were the shots of novocaine. That lasted until I got the Rx filled. Then it was a month, (I could have really used some stitches) of lortab and tylox.

Relax, it's something you have to get done and it's not pleasant. Why add to that? It's not as bad as you think and it's over before you know it.

I don't smoke, and I like mashed potatoes...so that's good:)

Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 05:38 PM by Crewleader
and in another week gets the bottom braces.

No fluids or food after mid-night the night before the extractions, no sodas' for a week...apply ice only - nothing warm..you have ice packs to change out in a face mask...only ice and you'll be fine...Sarge slept alot the first two days, liguid diet for awhile actually he had soft food the second day.

You'll be fine...it's not like the old days...I could tell you about me but I don't think you need to hear...just take all your meds...it will avoid infections. Just relax you be put out during and the rest is healing and resting before you know it you're on your way. :-)

You'll be fine...take your pills with jello too it's easier to swallow while Sarge's mouth was swollen and numb...that's a good tip.
Your mother can do that because you be sleepy and still drugged by the procedure...it will help her to help you.

Try not to worry...the best to you...:hi:
on edit
soft food for a week then had some solid like meat, macaroni & cheese, chicken noodle soup was his menu. :-)

14. Mine were impacted (one vertical)
and requiring an oral surgery saw to get it out.

Forunately, I was completely under.

Between the pain medication and the phenargen used to keep me from throwing up with the anesthesia I was a complete zombie for about 5 days. I could eat normally after about 3 weeks.

Be prepared to take off from work!

15. I had two taken out and another I should do something about
I keep hoping if I ignore it, it'll go away (which unfortunately doesn't seem to be working)

I also had them taken out as they came in. One at a time is the way to go. Each time it was done on a Friday and I was back at work by Monday. All I had was the shots of Novocain and some Tylenol when I got home.

I could tell you the horror story of having four teeth taken out when I was in middle school, but I'll wait until you've recovered.

Just relax, try not to think about it, and get through it. The best part is when you have recovered and realize there is no more mouth pain (and in my case I discovered I could eat pecans again)

16. Hi Astarho
Sarge had four teeth out all at the same time a month before the Wisdom...he's been through it and now the braces.

The bottom wisdoms are the ones near the nerve and most difficult , the tops are nothing...even impacted they come out easier.

Say hi to Mom...:-)

Good to see you..:hi:

18. Dude, all four of mine were impacted
and when they removed them, I experienced "dry socket" in all four holes. The pain was excruciating. I was trying to attend college at the time...ouch.

I finally went to a doctor and he put some medicated anesthetic strips into two of the sockets and the pain was immediately gone. (He should have done all four.)

If you end up suffering from dry sockets, go to the doctor immediately. You may shudder at the thought of anyone putting gauze into those gaping, hurting holes, but that pain is nothing compared to the pain of doing nothing.

Keep going back until the pain is bearable. Then you should be OK. This too shall pass.

19. You'll be fine
I had 3 impacted wisdom teeth removed during spring break my senior year in high school and it was not a bad as everyone likes to say. I was at the movies the next night and went out dancing in three or four days. My advice: stock up on all the soft foods you like because eating is the toughest part, try to stay awake and ice as much as humanly possibly the day they're removed, and prop yourself up on an extra pillow at night to help prevent swelling.

I was soooo nervous to have them removed, but the reality was nowhere near as bad as the stories~ you'll be fine. :)

20. Ouch!
But mine wasn't too bad. Just tell 'em to crank up the nitrous. Dentist office "Muzak" never sounded better.

Also, stock up on pudding, applesauce, etc.

And don't plan on giving any speeches soon after the surgery. My mouth just seemed kinda slow for a few days.

22. Don't listen to any horror stories - it's different nowadays
M surgeon said mine were the worst he had ever seen - impacted deep, long roots and a small jaw, but it turned out fine. This was about 12 years ago and I was in my late twenties even. I thought the worst thing was recovering from the anaesthetic. But two years ago, I went under anesthetic and it was a breeze. They have new stuff now and it is so much better!

Modern medicine is truly miraculous.
