It's a sad commentary on our seige mentality, but she's afraid to take the 'puter to a computer store lest they notice that she has saved a lot of anti-Bush stuff on her hard-drive.

Her Dell got hit either by a virus or by overzealous anti-virus software. Spent many unproductive hours on the phone with an outsourced Dell tech and is still getting error: C:\\windows\system\shlwapi.dll not found. Scan disk won't run to completion and she can't even access anything in Safe mode - well not much anyway. The tech had her editing some sort of shell script.

I'm in over my head - I test the stuff for a living, but fortunately I don't have to fix the bugs I find. Any DUers seen this happen before? If so, is it fixable? She uses Windows ME.

:argh:

1. What about copying from her CD?
If she has the CD she might be able to just copy it from the CD to the hard drive through the DOS mode (I don't know if you tried that already).

3. Thanks - I'll ask her if they tried that
Am not sure how to get to a DOS prompt in ME so she's on her own there. Things were so much simpler back in the day when you used command line prompts!

5. And thank you also!
She's going to her mother's to read e-mail tonight. I'll send this to her - it's small enough to load on a diskette. How she'll unzip it, I don't know. Bet she learns to make external back-ups from here on out!

4. Has she done a Google search on shlwapi.dll not found?
This is beyond my experience, but I just plugged the phrase into Google and came up with 1500 hits there and almost 2000 from Google Groups. It seems like it can be caused by a lot of different programs -- she'd really have to do her own searching to narrow it down.
