Celebrating! My "son" is on the way home from Iraq!
A 22-year-old "child" that I practically raised has been in Iraq since last February! He is due home on August 27th. He was with the 3rd Infantry. Some of you guys may remember me talking about his letters, all of which refer to the pResident as "that damned Bush," or "that fucker in chief."

Can't WAIT to hear the stories he will tell. He has said in his letters that no one could imagine the horrors he has seen.

We will be throwing him a huge barbecue on Labor Day weekend to celebrate his "release." He will then be enrolled in and attending the uni where I teach--taking advantage of the education promised him. He is one of many working class southern kids who signed up for the military so that they could get an education--the only way they could afford to get an education.

I will recommend DU to him as soon as he gets home. I can't tell you all how relieved I am that this is over for him and his family.

Peace!
jchild

5. Great news!
Hm, hope that he gets in some classes at the uni and lets all the other snot-nosed suburbanites know exactly what that "fucker in chief" did to him. ;)

What does he think of the whole "I support President Bush and the Troops" mentality?

6. Never discussed that specifically with him...
When I wrote him, I always attempted to inform him of local happenings...he became an uncle while in Iraq.

He talked about how miserable the conditions were over there, and he blamed bush for the 3rd unnecessarily being there.

I always got into shit with other DUers here because I said that I did support the troops...and I did--at least one of them--I sent items to him, such as lip balm, sunscreen, baby wipes. He would write back and say that he had received so much stuff from his friends at home that he was sharing it with other troops who received nothing.

I thought myself that it was bullshit to equate supporting people you love who were serving in iraq to supporting bush. I abhore bush, but I love Jay, and did everything I could to make his time in Iraq more comfortable.

He did write that the casualties and fatalities were being way underreported. THAT is what I really want to hear about. These guys and girls will be returning home soon, and you can BET that they won't present the Jessica-Lynch-adoration-of-bush face that we saw in that patriotic farce.

10. I'm just thrilled for you that he's making it home.
Way too many aren't. I get angry when I think about how many military vote Repug. I SO hope that changes.

I heard that there was a protest here in Houston today about the closing of a VA hospital or something. Wish I'd been there.

Best wishes for his safe return. I don't know how you parents are coping. I am determined that Smirky will NOT get my son. He's only 16 and a half now but 18 will come quickly and if we don't get idiot out of the white house the draft will be right along too. But for now..Happy Day! Celebrate. Count your blessings and lets pray all the soldiers make it home to their families.
