Was anybody besides me watching the X-Games? |
|
Skateboard vert is usually pretty boring (oh look, a 5-0 grind, oh look, a lipslide, oh look, kickflip to indy), but there were (as always) some pretty solid manuevers performed.
I'm torn between Rune Glifberg and Burnquist for best trick of the comp, though. Rune Glifberg did a switch frontside flip without grabbing it, which is absolutely insane (part of the reason I love Rune Glifberg -- he's absolutely fucking nuts, although not the best member of the Flip team by any stretch). Burnquist, after doing a backside one foot smith (switch, too, I believe), fell on his next air. And while he was just screwing around, he did a switch nosegrind and reverted it.
Now, raise your hand if any of you OLD GUYS have any clue as to what I'm talking about. :-)

My wife is a big skateboarding fan. She's an ex gymnast, so she can appreciate the skill.
She's also an expert at Tony Hawk.
I liked the dirt stunt bike too. It was a good display of guts. the 720 by Nyquist was beautiful, so was the big back flip.
I got into it in the sixties, then sold them in the 70's, then again in the 80's.

2. I didn't see the BMX dirt or park. |
|
I'm sure as hell looking forward to the skateboard park, though. When the people with real skill come out to play. :-)
I saw that Nyquist won the park, though. I think someone's been working on double bike backflips, and I remember last year somebody did a 360 double tail whip.
I also remember Nyquist going down really hard a year ago, as well. Good to see that didn't happen again.
Crazy seeing people over 20 get into X Games, heh. :-)

3. The way the extreme sports are evolving... |
|
.. and I've been waiting for this...
It won't be long before they have small motocross bikes on a half pipe... (if they haven't already)
I've seen some stuff pretty close to it... and some sick tricks doing it, too..

4. I can see that being possible... |
|
but I suspect that they'd have to make or specially reinforce ramps for that purpose -- I mean, a 180 pound dude with a skateboard or bike stomping a trick is probably a bit different than a 180 pound dude with a heavy motocross bike.
But that would be awesome.
As long as we're talking about evolution in the X Games, have you seen wake-skating? It's a toned down wakeboarding, only your feet aren't attached. Very interesting, and it seems like it takes a lot of skill.

5. Kite surfing is interesting, but still developing. |

I do like the inline skating and the street luge. Crazy fucks.
buying THPS 4 this week. My wife goes through them in short order. She does it on her Mac, she does not like game controllers.
I am an ex amateur cyclist. Screaming down a wet mountain road on a 20lb bike is pretty extreme. I appreciate the risks the extreme athlete takes.
