A question for any auto mechanics lurking today: |
|
Okay, then. Here is my question again, placed in the proper forum this time....
I have a 1997 Honda Accord that I bought 2 years ago from a dealership, and since then I've put about 25,000 miles on it. Presently I need to get the brakes done and have the axles replaced as the boots have all cracked, but other than that the car has been wonderful to me. That is, until just a little while ago.
I was driving home after dropping my wife off at work when suddenly the car just quit. The engine shut down and I was left coasting down the road with the radio playing but nothing else. I eased over and pulled into a gas station parking lot where I put the car into park, shut the ignition off and promptly restarted the car with no problem whatsoever. I got home just fine, but now I'm scared to death to drive the damn thing anymore.
I would imagine the problem is electrical in nature, but what is it most likely to be? The voltage regulator? Alternator? I don't know, so I'm asking for some well-educated guesses. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks! :)

If the radio was left on then it is more likely than not, not any electrical problem..when fuel pumps go, they get hot and cool down for a few and will restart before finally quitting
You said you put 25K on it but you didn't say how many miles the car has....

2. Has about 78,000 at this point |
|
I bought it from a reputable dealership here in Vegas (Desert Toyota to be exact). And like I said it has functioned beautifully until this odd occurrence.

3. I would venture to guess the fuel pump has never been replaced then |
|
and you are right about at the mileage where it would go...don't know how much they run on Honda's..I would suspect with labor it would run up to a couple hundred bucks.

I had a car that would just quit as if I had shut off the car. Turned out it was the electronics that controled the spark. Replaced the module and no more problem.

9. I was going to mention this |
|
I had one that would quit when it got hot, then after cooling it would start and run fine. It did this on a long trip. I ended up at the advice of a friend, putting a bag of ice over the computer module under the hood. The car ran fine as long as the ice was keeping it cool. I went through 20 gallons of fuel and 5 bags of ice on the return trip. At the time, the ice was the greater expense.
