The triplets' great-grandmother must have surgery on Tuesday to put in a new cardiac pacemaker. Her old one is dying and the alternative is that my mother dies.

I don't know how long she will be hospitalized. She is 92 years old. At this age, any kind of surgery is a major risk for her.

16. Old cardiac nurse here
If everything goes well, the whole business will be over in less than two hours. Replacing the battery pack is not as traumatic a procedure as placing the original pacemaker, because the leads going into her heart can be left in place and reused. All they're doing is taking one box out and putting another in, and programming it so it functions just like the old one did.

They'll give her medicine to make her sleepy and use a local anesthetic to put the new box in. She will snooze through most of it, and she won't face the risk of general anesthesia.

They will keep her overnight after the procedure, just to make certain her new pacemaker is funcioning properly. She will probably get a dose or two of IV antibiotics to make sure she doesn't develop an infection later.

She'll need some help when she gets home because her arm will be in a sling for a week or so. She may be a little sore at the insertion site, and whe'll probably need some help with bathing and dressing for a few days.

That's it in a nutshell. Best wishes to you and your grandmother.
