Computer peeps - Message Service??
I just bought a new puter for home and my wife is complaining about all these pop-ups that are headlinned "message service." I have had her install spybot and pop-up blockers but they are still there.

I suspect they have something to do with windows messenger or maybe AIM. How do I get rid of them!!!

thanks in advance!

JUST KIDDING!

Has to do the the MS Messenger.

I think you can turn it off in the control panel.

2. XP?
easy:
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

3. Lots of services not needed
If you are running XP or W2K, there are lots of services running that are not needed. If you would like to review some of these go to http://www.blackviper.com

On that page you will see links to windows xp services configurations and to windows 2000 services configurations. You can edit these manually or if you plunder around on the site you can find a downloadable reg file to change to preconfigured settings. If you have never done any registry editing I recommend you be very careful. The reg file takes the guess out of doing registry editing but you have to be careful to get the correct one. There are separate reg files for xphome, xp pro etc.

Does your pop-up look something like this?

http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/

And from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp

And I believe Windows Update will turn off MS Messenger (not to be confused with Instant Messenger).
