Have any of my fellow DUers considered conversion to Islam? A co-worker of mine did and it has totally got his life in order. He also believes it is a strong weapon to combat bushco and their "christian" conspiracy against Islam

2. I've looked at it a bit.... |

I'm kind of wandering in terms of spirituality at the moment... some aspects appeal to me more than Christianity, but I'm beginning to feel that in either case, one needs to only listen to the prophet whose teachings get misconstrued. Ya know, love thy neighbor, don't kill people, etc. A lot of that is the same in many major religions. It's all the other 'stuff' that I have issues with...

3. There is no power greater then man... |

It strikes me as sad that a person needs to convert to anything for such earthly reasons as getting one's life in order, or to combat a political machine.
But, that's just me...

4. It's reactionary against women, or so it's portrayed |

Like Christianity, I guess some factions of Islam are more repressive than others.

It's only 1400 years old. How tolerant Christianity was in the year 1400?

How is it a strong weapon against bush and this "Christian conspiracy against Islam"?
In answer to your first question, I've never considered converting to Islam. I've read the Qu'ran a couple times. Didn't do it for me.

Nor do I have any plans to consider converting to Islam, nor do I have any plans to consider considering converting to Islam.
But that's just me.

9. Sorry, but I've read the Koran... |

and it's not any friendlier to women than any of the other monotheistic religions. I'm not trading one patriarchal system for another.
That's not to say that Islam is a bad religion. It's just not any better than any of the others. And it is currently being abused by some of the men in control in ways that make my blood boil.

10. My brother converted to Sufiism, the mystical branch of Islam 5 yrs ago. |
|
I've respected his choice. Our family was a conglommeration of non-practicing Jews and it always seemed hypocritical to pretend to adhere to religious edicts when we ignored them on a regular basis.
My brother has embraced the seven pillars of Islam (prays several times a day), keeps his diet appropriately, and has announced his intention to attend the Haaj in the future. He married another Sufi, a woman is who a teacher in the sect.
I've attended a couple of his religious/social rituals and found them to be worthy of consideration, but I'm a humanist and not likely to favor one religion over another one.
My family freaked when he "came out" when he got married. Our father proclaimed his son had joined a "cult", our sister threw a fit, our mother was dismayed because she was 100% atheist, etc.
Since then, our mother died last year. Our sister and father have changed considerably and are cool with my brother's choices. It's a shame this change-of-heart could not have happened sooner, but y'know, I didn't think it would ever happen.
