Drunk Teen Asks Police For Ride Home - Was Too Drunk To Walk
<snip>

AUSTIN, Minn. -- Proof that too much alcohol can impair your judgment.

A 16-year-old boy has been cited for underage drinking after walking into the police station in Austin early Sunday morning and asking officers for a ride home.

The teen told them he was too drunk to walk.

2. Actually, his judgement was quite good.

It's the laws that are scewed. He shouldn't receive an award or media coverage. Just a ride home would have been nice, and perhaps a pleasant conversation with his parents or guardian.

On edit - Maybe he was taught that the police were nice people sought out when help is needed.

4. Lesson:
If you have any choice in the matter, do not ask the police for help.

5. oh man these cops are so wrong
In many areas there have been campaigns in the past, at least on certain nights, that if you can't get a cab and you're drunk, you can call the police for a ride and won't be cited. Possibly the child had heard of such campaigns and thought he was doing the right thing. It is even possible a parent told him, honey, if you can't get hold of me, and you can't get a cab, please ask a police officer to drive you home.

The point of alcohol laws is to save life and limb. The 16 year old was trying to get home safely.

I would have given the kid a warning and taken him home without further ado.

Teens drink and will continue to drink but in future I'm confident this kid will either just drive drunk himself or allow another of his drunken friends to take him home, adults having proven entirely untrustworthy.
