Found moronic "anti-drug" ad in Time magazine today.
Edited on Tue May-04-04 05:22 PM by JohnLocke
Page 29 in this week's Time):

Page split in two. Top shows a middle-aged homeless guy with a blanket on a street. Over the photograph is words in white, "It doesn't always end here." Bottom shows a kid in an orange shirt holding a joint. Over the photograph says "But it does often start here." Off to the left it says "If your child is messing with marijuana and alcohol, no one can say how it will turn out...Action. The Anti-Drug."

:wtf:

A bit hyperbolic, doncha think? I don't smoke pot (never had) but this strikes me as scare-tactic hyperbole. I think America's focus on the "Drug War" has been on the wrong drugs and the wrong people, using the wrong tactics. Comments?

BTW, more time idiocy here.

1. yeah, i have seen that one.
all drugs are bad except the ones who have lobbyist.

hyperbolic to the extreme. like the one where a baby is walking around the edge of a pool unattended and then a voice says "just tell your parents you were getting high" or some bullshit.

9. Actually that has happened
I had a friend whose cousin drowned because her uncle passed out. Because of that she keeps a constant eye on her kid even while high, she cries everytime she sees that comercial.

2. The war on pot
It angers me to no end.
The ads are stupid and misleading.

Because the biggest problem facing our nation is people smocking a little weed? Right!

I know more than a few people who would benefit from a couple of bong hits.

13. Idea (forgive me if this is total poppycock)

Rex Raygun finds a planet where lots of people are imprisoned because they smelled a flower that cures headaches. In that planet, even saying the flower cures headaches will get you in prison. Saying "hey, throwing people in prison for that is excessive" will also get you in prison.

We later discover that planet is one of the galaxy's biggest producer of spaceship parts -- nobody can beat their prices. You can guess why.

3. I have friends who smoke pot...none of them are homeless...
none of them uses any other illicit drugs, and all of them are pretty much successful.

I don't smoke myself, but think it should be legalized. What is the difference between alcohol and pot? People shouldn't be driving under the influence of either one. And I think alcohol is a bit more destructive than pot.

They are spending all of our tax money on that crap. How sad.

4. Worse yet,
the kids at whom the ads are aimed can clearly see through them. I have a 17 year old son and he knows they're bullshit. And because the ads overstate the real dangers of pot so outrageously, there's no credibility for an adult to say Be Careful.

Probably the very worst is one that's been on TV in which a kid, high on marijuana, has a car accident which kills his younger brother. While such a thing may very well have happened, it's driving under the influence of alcohol that's the big issue.

In a similar vein, it's important to warn against the dangers of tobacco NOT by comparing it to alcohol or other psychoactive drugs, but by talking about what's so terrible about smoking or chewing or in any way ingesting tobacco.

In other words, keep it real.

7. No, there is a way to say Be Careful
"Be Careful of the Gestapo, it's not worth the risk."

11. The DARE program has discovered that, too
Some of their people will actually admit it, that the DARE program only has a short-term effect on kids' drug and alcohol use. Over the long term, there is exactly zero difference in drug use between kids who went through the program, and kids who did not. Part of the reason for this is the extreme hysteria and hyperbole with which some of the material is presented. When the kids are older, and find out that the DARE program exaggerated the dangers of marijuana, then they're likely to figure that maybe the dangers of other drugs were exaggerated, too, and throw out the baby with the bathwater.

10. As someone who works in substance abuse prevention...
Edited on Tue May-04-04 04:54 PM by southpaw
I feel that diverting resources away from fighting the really dangerous drugs (meth, crack, heroin...) to wage a war on weed is apalling...

Pot kills your ambition, but meth kills all of you...
