From dictionary.com
fad ( P ) Pronunciation Key (fd) n. A fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period of time; a craze
We have the brief bit, only 103 years so far, but the enthusiasm just isn't there.
In my experience, Australians think of politicians like flies. There are plenty of them, they annoy the living crap out of you, but there is little you can do about it so you just have to ignore them and get on with it.
That is both the good and bad bit about Australian politics :-)
