What exactly does w00t mean |
|
and why is it written like that?
Several people use that and I just never have quite gotten it. So, I'm hoping for an explanation. Also, where did it originate?

1. w00t alone means nothing. You have to add "day it ith." |

It's the equivalent of "WooHoo" in 1337 5p34k.

1337 5p34k translates to "leet speak", (leet meaning "elite"). It a system of replacing letters with numbers and other characters that (mostly) kids use when they're messaging each other. I'm not exactly sure how it got started, but I suspect that it was a way to keep their parents from knowing what they were talking about. I'm much better at reading it that \/\/r171n6 1n 1337 5p34k, to be honest.
You've seen my license plate: BLU3J4Y. Same principle, but simplified.

Gotta run to my other job now. Have fun! :hi:

First: w00t became a popular interjection back in about 1996, when "Starsiege Tribes" was an extremely popular online-fps. It's a way of saying "Wahoo!" after a frag.
1337 sp34k was a trademark of some German hackers back in '99. It became popular through the game "counter strike," but is no longer used due to the large amount of script-kitties who used it. The idea behind 1337 sp34k was to replace letters with numbers and symbols in order to confuse people who intercepted emails which detailed net attacks.
P.s: Internet terms change everywhere, so there is no set 1337 language. Thus, anyone who tries to say there is a set meaning for a given word or phrase is a fool.

"W00T" is away of saying "YEA!" I guess...It really means Wonderful Loot. This dates back to the early days on online gaming in such games as Quake and Everquest which if you killed someone you got money, and hopefully lots of it. If you got tons of cash for a kill you would say w00t or W00T! to express pride and joy in this. This later goes on to show joy in all events in the internet and has been a praised word among hackers and gamers alike.

Quote: Stems from 80's hacker lingo. When a hacker 'rooted' (got root access to) a 'box' (a computer hooked up to the internet) he would exclaim "woot. (I have root.)" Later use spread to the hacker's lesser brethren, the gamer, and most hackers no longer use the term.
Quote: Simply a word that was originally used by hackers to exclaim they had acsess to the root. Soon after was adopted by gamers. Now, it's a way of life. Much like Zen, a more happy state of mind.
Theory 2
Quote: Actually, the word woot is much older than EQ or 80s hacker lingo. It is a middle english word meaning "know" or "knew."
Theory 3
Quote: A celebratory exclamation. Believed to have originated in Quake II capture-the-flag matches, as an acronym for "We Owned the Other Team".
Theory 4
Quote: It seems to have been derived from the obselete 'whoot' which essentially is another way to say 'hoot' which itself is a shout or derisive laugh.
___________________________________________________________
Its definitely not from everquest, I've never heard the expression "Wonderful Loot" used in EQ and I played it for about 3 years. And besides, wonderful loot sounds really stupid for such a commonly used expression.

I think you just answered your own question dude!
Am I right?
And at the bottom, it's something about laughing my ass off rolling on the floor and I can't make out the rest. Can I have a clue?

19. Great job for a l33t5p34k novice! |
|
You got the first part right, and I just put LMAO and gibberish after that. It doesn't mean anything in particular.
The bottom says edit: correctionzorz. Zorz is just added on to random words, for example 101z0rz and (to borrow a theme from the lounge) p00pz0rz.
By the way, to give a more specific answer to your question, from what I've seen w00t is generally used in the same way someone would say "what" as an exclamation. But better explanations have already been given, so just consider that another perspective.
If you ever have someone "w00t" you over the internet, I would recommend a response of something along the lines of "stfu g31ghw4d!!!11." They won't know w00t h1t th3m.
