Let's just admit it: Thin Lizzy fucking rules.
I'm sorry, metal-haters: Thin Lizzy were amazing. Phil Lynott will eat your pets and sing a beautiful soul ballad in metal form about it.

I'm listening to "Bad Reputation" right now, eating pizza, and having a grand time. THIN LIZZY, MOTHERFUCKER!

Anyone who doesn't worship at the altar of Philip Lynott is not to be trusted.

2. Agreed. But who is singing on their most recent tour...
I can't imagine that being anything other than a total travesty.

3. What?!?!?!?!?!?!
No one can replace Phil Lynott. Impossible. Impostor!

If I find out who it is, I will stone him to death.

6. Yeah, they've played some club gigs around NY....
...and also are opening up for Deep Purple at some bigger shows.

7. Thin Lizzy without Lynott is like Floyd without Waters......
Doable, but sucky.

10. I don't even see how it's doable...
At least Gilmore legitimately sung a good portion of their songs prior to Waters leaving. And they were just as much revered for their instrumentation and music as for vocals and lyrics.

Thin Lizzy was by and large Phil's band and his raspy, everyman vocals were its key ingredient. They had some decent players but nobody I'd pay even $5 to see without Lynot.

12. Exactly. They can DO it, but.......
It'll be like sewing the head back on a guillotined corpse.

The whole twin guitar thing is cool, but Phil....Phil is why I like the band. He wrote the tunes and his gift for off-the-beat phrasing was the key to their brilliance. It was the metal-soul hybrid I wished for as a kid.

4. I Always Liked Them
Thought Phil's voice was really emotive. And, they had some good guitar players in that band over the years.

I'll stand with you on this.

9. Phil Lynott:
Black Irishman, over 6' tall, plays bass with a pick, sings like Van Morrison, fronts a twin-guitar metal band.

I'm sorry, but that is the DEFINITION of cool.

8. They ruled a lot. They were full of 'rule'
Plus they get extra credit for having a bass player front the band, and a baritone at that.

My personal favorite is one of their slow ones: Dancing in the Moonlight. It's kind of a 'metal-swing' hybrid. Never heard anything like it before that (though many have copied it since).

11. I'm listening to that one right now!
"I always get chocolate stains on my pants....." Fucking incredible. How they weren't the biggest goddamn band on the planet will always elude me. They should have been who Van Halen became. (Drugs......)

14. The only Lizzy most people have heard is "Boys are back in town..."
But their catalogue is extensive. Sometimes they put out two albums a year!

My band does a version of "Jailbreak" amongst our Jam-Clash-Costello influenced material. We'll be playing in Chicago soon, like June 12 or so....

15. We're playing this Friday....
At Cal's Dive Bar on Wells and Van Buren.

We go on around 10. Maybe I should create a separate post.

Luckily, 'XRT have played a LOT of Thin Lizzy over the years. That's where I heard DITM the other day.

23. I'd love to catch it, but I work nights as a cook....
And ESPECIALLY weekend nights (our busiest time of the week). Owie. When we start playing out, it's gonna be Monday nights all the time, probably. Keep me updated as to the next time y'all are playing.

And XRT is a suprisingly good station...I'm used to Nashville, which is fucking Clear Channel's utopia city.

Seriously underappreciated band.

I'd love to hear your cover of Jailbreak. :)

21. It sounds like The Jam covering Lizzy.....
But it's better than our Darkness "I Believe in a Thing called Love" cover, since our singer can't hit those high notes and sings it with a Welleresque growl.

Fun, though! For one of our shows, we're going to cover the entire first Clash album...should be awesome.

That musta been pretty cool, right? (Yes, I'm sick of "Boys are Back" too. Lizzy are a LOT more than that one tune, though. They released something like 15 albums while Phil Lynott was alive!)
