11. Origins of the phrase Black Box Voting

In engineering a Black Box is a device that does something that you cannot observe. Some action or energy is performed on it and something else comes out the other side. It comes up as a problem solving experiment. You have to figure out what it is doing inside.

In the election issue it is the fact that we do not know what is going on inside it that creates the problem. Any number of manipulations could be occurring beyond our sight. Black Box Voting systems cut us off from being able to verify the veracity of elections.
