2. It is one thing to be celibate by choice... |
|
another to have celibacy thrust upon one. I'm not a celibacy kinda guy. I don't think I've ever gone a month without, but probably close a few times.

and couldn't go for a few months. It's all about loving the person, not loving the person's body alone.

7. I've never considered sex |
|
Something essential, like eating or breathing. I think I posted on this subject a while back. I was celibate until the age of 18 and have been celibate since last August. I certainly haven't sat around thinking about how much I needed sex. Maybe that's my problem. Anyway, I have my reasons, I suppose.
It's not that I don't like sex, it's just that I don't care.

8. 11 years, but not by choice. |
|
Just because I'm divorced and very, very shy, and on the verge of being a senior citizen.
But I'm OK with it. The whole relationship thing can take too much time and energy. My life is calmer and more serene wihout a "significant other" (or "authorized user" as the credit card companies put it). I seriously doubt if I will ever have another girlfriend/wife/lover/companion/whatever, unless someone buys me an inflatable playmate for my 60th birthday ;)

It's been more than 11 years for me ... a few years by choice and a few years not. But now I'm happy and content. I don't need another person to sexually fulfill me (although I wouldn't turn it down, given the right person). I don't know if that makes me celibate "by choice" or not. It's just that I'm no longer actively pursuing a sexual partner. Nice to know there are others out there in my same situation, and not embarrassed to talk about it.

9. I've done several years at a time |
|
Sometimes by choice, sometimes by circumstance, sometimes alternating between the two. At one point I was acting irresponsibly sexually, and decided to put some boundaries around my sexual behavior. After being celibate for a very long time, I eventually decided that I was using those boundaries as a tool for isolation, and changed them.
I have reasonable boundaries around my sexual behavior (desperate husband-hunting posts on DU notwithstanding), but I will admit I don't always live up to my own standards. I think that's pretty normal.

If you're 41 and have not been celibate for longer than one month in your lifetime . . .
I don't necessarily consider celibacy to be extended periods lacking sexual activity between partners. I guess others would have a different POV.
That was vague. I'll try to be clearer:
In my life, I considered myself celibate when I didn't have a lover -- not when I did have one and we'd gone for a while without having sex.

Generally, you have to wait a minimum 6-8 weeks for medical reasons. Other than that, no, but I've been married to one person since I was in my teens. That would be very hard to for me to give up. I think part of the reason I married young was because I liked the security of being in a relationship (not a casual sex type) and basically having my needs regularly met. Not that I'm not capable of meeting them myself when necessary either.
