Poll question: Do you believe extraterrestrial UFOs have visited or do visit Earth? |
|
Edited on Fri May-07-04 11:44 PM by nu_duer
I personally tend to believe that there was a UFO crash near Roswell, NM in 1947, and I tend to believe that a significant portion of our current "technology" was derrived from back-engineering of their technology.
I also, almost daily, grow stronger in my suspicion that members of our government leadership, and perhaps the government leadership of other nations, may indeed include beings not of this Earth.
But the question is - the POLL :D question is - do you believe we have been, or are being visited by otherworldy creatures?
* * * * * YEEAARRGGHH! I GOT MY STAR BACK!!!!! :D :D :D

It is likely that there are aliens.
It is not likely they will ever be able to pilot a craft to Earth with more than a message.
There is no chance of there being any ghosts by any name.

If you allow for the likely existence of alien beings, how do you limit their technological capablilites, as in "not likely they will ever be able" to reach Earth physically?
Why would they be bound by our evolution/priorities?

15. I didn't mean to imply that alien life was visitiing the earth |
|
or that it was of superior intelligence. I just think it all boils down to a matter of faith

16. They would have the same constraints as we do. |
|
It is not the ability of the species/beings that poses the problem, we ( all beings in this universe ) are castaway on our individual gravity wells by the vastness of space. Setting aside the physical limits of a gravity well being surviving extended amounts of time, covering the vast distances between the solar systems. What being smart enough to build the technology is going to be willing to give up not only their lives but the lives of many of their generations of offsprings to land some of their beings on some distant world several hundred years in the future. The tremoundous speeds that would be attained are also a huge problem. Not that it's possible but assume you could attain 10 percent of the speed of light. Now there are two very large problems one the smallest particle of space rock hitting a space craft going that fast would easily destroy it. Then if you think going 10 percent the speed of light is hard wait till you start trying to figure out how to stop.

22. It must be comforting... |
|
... to have all the answers before we even know what questions to ask. Sorta reminds me of Bushco. They had all the answers for Iraq before they even set foot in the country. Dogma is dogma, be it scientific or political.
But for each person who thinks he has all the answers there are a few of us that know better. No disrespect intended, but I know for a fact you are wrong.

...life forms that may exist in our galaxy and whether or not they may be able to communicate with earth. It says nothing about alien life forms visiting earth. Considering the distance between worlds, this makes the drake equation moot as far as this poll is concerned.

However, i believe that our concepts of "space travel" are akin to cavemen trying to figure out what a falling star is.
we can't even imagine what could be done with enough time, assuming we don't kill off the whole planet to prove god exists.

5. I believe that aliens are more likely to exist than god. |

However, as always, outrageous claims require outrageous proof and so far that proof does not exist. It's fun to believe in bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster and UFOs, but the burden of proof is on those making a positive claim. So far, nothing has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Believing in bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster and UFOs is generally harmless. However, belief in god usually goes along with some harmful dogma. Sorry, I ain't down with dogma. My karma ran over your dogma.
It's possible--maybe even probable--that intelligent life exists in the universe, but the chance that we are being visited by such life is very, very low. Show me the proof, then I'll believe.

Again, I just don't like when there are generalizations. A belief in UFOs can lead us astray - we can get just as fanatical. Some people believe in abductions, and I don't. We can prepare for imaginary invasions.
Anyway, I think the chances of both God and aliens existing are equal. Just IMO. Aliens being in UFOs is possible, but less likely than the existence of aliens.

The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us.

I think the whole alien thing is a joke. There's no aliens. I don't think so, anyways.
If there is alien life, then it's in the form of microbes.

I'll tell you why. I don't believe that if they visited earth they'd have any reason to be surrepticious about it. In other words, if they had you'd KNOW it.
I tend to think that eventually any intelligent species that reached the far-flung space-faring stage would do a "Rama" kind of thing. They would realize that finding life would be an easter-egg hunt and thus would maximize their resources assuming they wanted to find intelligent life. They'd send out probe ships which would then lead said intelligent life back to themselves provided it was worthy and safe.
Bleh. I can't get my fingers (or brain) to cooperate so I stop here and go to bed. Take care fellow space-travelers!
