Art suggestions needed :) . . .
Okay, so it's another post about my new loft. Now, the color is all white, my furniture is mostly dark greens and dark colors of wood. I need some ideas for paintings and other art to help color it up a tad.

Any suggestions would be most welcome (all going in the spaces shown in the last post http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=1115137&mesg_id=1115137 . I'm not big on floral stuff, but I love stuff like Picassos "Blue Nude" and most of Dali's stuff. I'm just looking for something a little less common, but still fairly readily available as a print or a canvas reproduction.

Come on folks, I know there's someone out there with some suggestions :).

THANKS!

2. True . . . .
But I'm not sure that a landscape is what I want for this environment. I could poke around and see if I find any that will work though.

I'll see if I find anything workable. Maybe something with a lake or pond involved would work. . . hmmmmmm. . . this will take some thought :).

Fortunately, this isn't of vital importance, I'm just coming up with ideas at this point.

brick/red sandstone sounds like it may work and cactus are a dark green not "landscapy" at all

also they are not "lush" some are quite simple and striking without being busy-- for instance

5. That's a great place.
I love Picasso and his work would look great on those walls. Think big. The place is small and the larger scale will actually make the space appear bigger and less cluttered. Try Ebay or www.art.com for some posters or prints. Be creative, a nice rug can be hung or even scarves or fabric stretched on a frame (try A.C. Moore or Michaels). Choose what you like, you have to live with it and look at it daily and it will come together.

10. I agree with you as to size. . .
I've been thinking the same thing. Of course, the cost gets a bit restrictive as you go up in size too.

Like I said though, I have plenty of time to think about it. It's not like I need to fill the walls right away :).

THANKS for the suggestions!.

7. Check out Kandinsky!
Lots of cool bright colors, amazing movement, and abstract ideas.

His stuff is getting more available all the time at framing places and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Chagall's also a good choice for color, although his stuff is more quirky, with interesting characters and lots of Hebrew symbolism.

8. Hmmm, Kandinsky is interesting. . . .
A bit more abstract than I usually like, but I really like his use of color. Some very interesting stuff.

Chagall's stuff I don't care for that much for some reason. It's not bad, just not ME if you know what I mean :).

15. Chagall has a weird effect on me
I really like his paintings and his style, and I could look at hundreds of them at a sitting, but I find that after looking at one for more than a few moments it starts to bother me. I don't know what's up with that. I think his art is brilliant, and I love the colors and the sort of "scribble" quality of it, but there's this "can't look at it for more than a few moments..." thing.

I was at an art store today, and they had some Dali's there - they were pen drawings, fricking brilliant, and signed - but an "embossed signature", so certainly printed after his death, though still obviuosly authorized by his estate, and numbered limited editions. I was very, very tempted to get one. They were in the $380-$500 range framed.

9. Well, one feels bad for tooting one's own horn,
but *cough cough* we do have some artists here on DU - melsky for one, and myself, radfringe, and I'm sure some others I'm forgetting - who sell original artwork, which is, in my opinion, a much better way to acquire art than unlimited edition reprints. Though, of course, for people at income levels like us, if we want a Dali or Picasso a poster is all we're gonna get. :-)

I had almost forgotten that you guys paint :).

I like your stuff, perhaps I should be looking to you to fill my rather large walls.

13. and some of us work large,
and are commissionable for even larger. Though I don't think you'd want to go any larger than a 30"x40", since it will be about 36"x46" after framing, which is 3'x4', and for your short ceilings, that's about all you'd need, unless you have a spot that won't have furniture on the floor - then you get a nice 7-8' tall one. :-)

12. p.s. - you have a great new apartment!
What a view to wake up to in the morning, and watch at night.

And that long hallway and wall - just begging for some large, brightly colored art and track lighting in the hallway at least.

16. Dude, Ebay!
We have at least a couple of artist regulars on DU, but if their stuff doesn't suit you spend an evening looking at ebays "self-representing artists". I get stuff on a regular basis for $15-25. NOne of these would likely suit you, but you can find some good stuff on there. $15-25 is just the price range I choose to look at - I generally ignore anything more expensive.

Original art is so much classier than prints. I wouldn't have a print in my house ... if I had a house ... never mind that part.
