Someone polled the Lounge last week with the classic Trek vs. Star Wars dilemma, and two folks mentioned these shows as well. So, I give you Babylon 5 (and its associated bad guy, Bester) vs. Blake's 7 (and its associated bad guy on our side, Avon).

The British always got there first and did it with gusto!
B7 used to be compared with Trek... B7 always got the better review. :D
Avon was NOT a bad guy. He was there for himself, looking after #1. The others in the group were more readily willing to bond, but Avon stood away. He was irritating, but not evil.
Of course, everything he did was about money (season 1 is loaded with comments regarding money, wealth, money being the only reality, and so on, and creator/writer Terry Nation had a field day with his character...), so maybe your ascertation of him being evil isn't wrong. :-)
