Bands that only you seem to know!
At my very first Gay Pride Parade in Chicago I picked up a tape for a group called "TAPPS" with the song "My Forbidden Lover". Ever since I've been hooked on TAPPS.

They have a mixed bag with their lyrics. Some are just telling a weird story, others have a pretty good point (12 oz. Epilogue is a good example).

104. Have You Checked Out Year of the Rabbit?
It's Ken Andrews's return to rock, after his On project.

Definitely reminiscent of Failure, but not as good I think. But then, Failure were one of my faves. If you haven't checked out Magnified, the album before FP, you should do so. It's great as well.

Trivia note: Fantastic PLanet was recorded at Lita Ford's house.

42. Ack! I saw Triumverate live!
They were a cheesy Euro rip-off of ELP, and they SUCKED! "Illusions On A Double Dimple" on my butt!

They were warming up for the Bob Welch-led Fleetwood Mac, so this had to be mid-70's. Man they were lame.

8. The Hangmen
I've posted about them several times and only one person on DU had ever heard of them. They've got a classic LA punk sound, raw and Western, full of mournful melody, singing songs about being high, drunk and broke, getting into fights, looking for drugs, fucking and trucking--that sort of uplifting subject we've come to expect from the youth of Southern California. But they're not so young. Bryan Small, the leader/singer/songwriter, started the band in the late 1980s, made one record for Capital, then fell apart for a decade before getting himself and the band back together. They've made three CDs for Acetate Records: Metallic I.O.U., We've Got Blood on the Toes of Our Boots (a superior live session), and the just-released Loteria, which I haven't heard yet.

I stumbled on them accidentally while looking for the original of a Lyres cover ("What a Girl Can't Do") mistaking them for the DC area 1960s garage band also called The Hangmen.

10. Martin Newell and the Cleaners from Venus
http://www.martinnewell.co.uk/

From his bio:

"Martin Newell, he's a bit of a Renaissance man you know. I mean how many people do you know who, on a regular basis, write articles for radio and the newspapers, poetry for the stage and the page, make music, make films, make beer and then go out and do a gardening round in their home village.

Martin has been making music for well over thirty years now and while it is fair to say commercial success has largely eluded him, critical acclaim has been very strong. Those who have been lucky enough to discover him often hold him in lofty esteem along with the likes of Ray Davies and Syd Barrett. Martin's music has a very strong Englishness and perhaps, perversely, it is for that reason that a lot of his fanbase is outside his native land. He has enjoyed a particularly strong following in Germany and was actually mobbed by fans in Japan in the early 90's. Discerning Americans have also taken to him since discovering him through his association with, that other most English of acts, XTC."

92. Your username...
...actually made me think of the band Failure when I saw it in another thread. I've only ever heard one song by them, though...there was a video for it on 120 Minutes a couple years ago. Chino from the Deftones was hosting the show that night and he went on about how Failure was one of his favorite bands.

Whatever happened to Dig anyway? I do remember their song, Why Don't You Believe from back in the day, but that's it. Have they made any records recently?

19. Preacher Jack . . .
Edited on Wed May-12-04 11:19 AM by OneBlueSky
boogie-woogie rock & roll preacher out of Boston . . . been around for years . . . not much of a singer, but plays a mean bw piano reminiscent at times of the great ones (Albert Ammons, etc.) . . . also, the Radio Kings, a sort of tex-mex r&b group, also out of the Boston area I think . . . their album "Live at B.B. King's" is kick-ass . . .

on edit: might as well add Sleepy LaBeef, although he's more well known than the previous artists mentioned . . . old-time rockabilly guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Smackwater, Arkansas, who settled in New England after his bus broke down there in the early 70s . . . plays all over the region, generally with pickup bands consisting of Rounder Records artists and local musicians . . . has an amazing repertoire . . . can play for hours (and often does) and never repeat a song . . . if you live in New England, you've probably heard of him and maybe seen him . . . great live shows . . .

Great!
You're sorta/kinda in their neighborhood. They are from Oklahoma, I believe. I don't think they have played in Minnesota. I found them a few years ago when Radio K (WUOM) played "Valerie Flames" while I was driving. I pulled over to the curb, whipped out a pen and paper and wrote down their name. It took a few months, but eventually I found their first CD. Played it to death, never expected to hear from them again. Now, they have a second CD that I'm also playing a great deal. They are wonderfully quirky!

Where did you hear them?

I loved them. I went out and bought all their CD's right after. They're nice folks too. We partied with them after the show.

If you like that whole Kindercore / E6 sound you may like my friends band 63 Crayons http://hhbtm.com/63crayons/

They play Lo-fi 60s psychedelic stereophonic pop. They've been describes as The Mamma's and the Poppa's meet Olivia Tremor Control. They are getting airplay on a lot of College Radio stations right now.

123. Check out the description on all music
http://www.allmusic.com

Hard to describe this group. Here's part of the bio from allmusic:

Despite a relatively small recorded output and little media recognition, Bark Psychosis was one of the most innovative artists of their era. From rather uninspired origins as a teenaged Napalm Death cover band, the British group evolved by leaps and bounds, moving from moody, lush pop to ambient soundscapes to taut, atmospheric experimental music; their work was so revolutionary, and so impossible to define, that noted critic Simon Reynolds even found it necessary to invent a new sub-genre — "post-rock" — simply to categorize their vision.

Souljacker is the only Eels CD I listen to frequently. I think it's supposed to be his "Rock and Roll" CD. "Dog Face Boy," always makes me laugh and "Woman Driving, Man Sleeping" is one of the only moody songs I like.

96. My son is a big eels fan.
He took me to see them last summer. He and I, and two of his friends, standing right under the stage at the Henry Fonda theater on Hollywood Blvd. It was an incredibly diverse audience, all enthusiastic. Daisys of the Galaxy is the one I listen to most often, but Shootenanny has a song about me:

I am a lone wolf
I always was and will be
I feel fine, I am resigned to this
I am a lone wolf
I am a lone wolf

Got my cares
Wrapped up all nice and neat
In my suitcase
I’ll take it down the street
To a place with plenty of space for me
I am a lone wolf

I am a lone wolf
It blows my mind
That people wanna try to get inside my tired head
I am a lone wolf
I am a lone wolf

I am a lone wolf
Nobody needs to get too close to me
You’ll only see this truth
I am a lone wolf

And, as for Nate...he is a life-long friend of my son; they played together for a few years. He has a website featuring little local independent bands, including his own dead rats. Not my personal kind of music, but I've been showing up for local gigs a couple of times a year to cheer him on for a long time. I haven't been since last summer.

149. Nate is a unique young man.
Enjoy.

A couple of my favorites from "Daisies:"

Sound of fear
Packing blankets
Wooden nickles
Mr. E's beautiful blues

These songs are from a lower point in Mr. E's life, and it shows. They met me at my own low point. The dichotomy between the upbeat, bubbly, sound and the serious, melancholy lyrics in some of the songs is attention-grabbing.

172. I've heard some of it
while a passenger in my son's car. Apparently, (according to my son), the music reflects the grieving process, and the process of dealing with his own severe depression. You can follow the process in the "tone" of the subsequent CD.

My sons, both of them, have diverse musical tastes; many are different than mine! But we are music lovers, so there is always common ground. And this son, the eels fan, is a musician himself.

90. Life of Agony
I know their name is bad, but they are a great, heavy, yet beautifully melodic band from Brooklyn, New York. Musically they are like a mix of Black Sabbath, Stone Temple Pilots, Biohazard, Deftones, Hatebreed and Smashing Pumpkins, with a dash of Morrissey thrown in. The most "mainstream" success I recall them having was in the mid 90s, and that amounted to a video or two on Headbanger's Ball. They are truly great, though, and do have a devoted following. I'm actually going to see them play for the first time very soon! Woo hoo! :headbang:

133. Chickasaw Mudpuppies
They were a good little band kind of sounding like a backwoods country version of REM.

Liked them.

147. The Butchies, Bratmobile, and Joan Jett
For some odd reason, I only know one person who knows who Joan Jett is: my dad... even workers at record stores are unfamiliar with her. Weird.

That's just wrong!

Bratmobile are great - they just put out a new album not that long ago. Well, maybe it was last year - time flies.

154. I know!
I've went to a few record stores lately and when I couldn't find *any* of Joan Jett's CD's on the racks, I would ask the clerk or whoever... and each time- they'd ask me to spell "Jett"! Oh dear.

"Girls Get Busy" is a good album, but it's way different that the earlier stuff... it's the only Bratmobile CD I own though, so I cherish it very dearly =)

163. Bratmobile, Joan Jett...
I have the "Girls Get Busy" CD and listen to it often. I've been thinking of using it to inspire my eleven-year old daughter, who wants a bass guitar for her upcoming birthday.

I'll bet the people who don't know Joan Jett draw a blank on most musicians of her generation. If it's a real record store, they should be better educated; if it's a Circuit City, I don't think they are required to actually know anything about music.

'Have heard OF the Butchies a few times, but haven't heard them yet.

150. Suffrajett & Woodlawn
Edited on Thu May-13-04 09:22 PM by Squeegee
Suffrajett is fun energetic rock band with great lyrics and Woodlawn a dark, moody and soulful industrial/folk-fusion hybrid. And I just realized, both bands are fronted by female lead vocalists.

Kind of cool.

If you've heard Ekoostik, then I presume you've heard Umphrey's McGee? If you haven't, you should -- they're a fantastic group of musicians.

I don't know if any of the Hookah guys are in Umphrey's McGee, but I think that Umphrey's is absolutely fabulous. Right up there, I would almost say, with String Cheese.

162. Fetchin' Bones and Pansy Division
Fetchin' Bones were a great punk bar band in the eighties.

I got a Pansy Division tape once from one of their band members at a shop I worked at. I asked the guy where the name came from: "From an Andy Griffith episode where Floyd the barber entered a flower show with his pansies and won the award in the "pansy division". Clever gay punks, and pretty good music.
