Any other GIS freaks in the Lounge? Wanna start a collective?
Edited on Thu May-13-04 08:46 PM by JanMichael
People are always shocked when I show them the demographic, economic, political (Read registered voters by parcel) and mapping, crap that I can "magically" create (Read: scatter maps of all home values between, let's say, 100k and 200k, in one geographic area).

Good GAWD it's easy too. I can tell you where the richest, or poorest, voters and citizens in every blasted county in America are, where they live, whether they're a likely renter or owner, and their address'...Most info is free, the rest is pretty cheap. It's totally up for grabs.

Who'd like to help create a Progressive Cause/GIS Database/Political Mapping group?

It's all public info anyway. Who'd else would like to screw ESRI/Maptitude, and a bunch of snake oil salesmen, and share the land? Let's give it away!

1. Where do you find this public info at?
Is any of it on the web? If so, can you please provide some links?
Thanks

3. Are you a GIS nutter?
It's ok if you aren't, just curious:-)

An example? I can get the NC voter registration files (To map for addresses) for $25 (Lost the link, it's either the Secretary of State or Elections, I forget), the whole state, every registered voter, where they live, and their party registration.

7. Much is free, like city limits, roads and census data.
Accounts (Parcels: Value of home, name, location...) are usually free or very inexpensive. Just go to your city's site or your county and there's usually an email address where you can request the file. They usually say that you can't sell it but we aren't doing that anyway.

As I said earlier the states usually sell the voter rolls in GIS formats for $25-100 for every single voter, their addy, their geographical location and other nifty info.

What's neat is taking census info, adding an income layer over that, then merging it with voter registration. It's like a political match maker.

2. I'm in
my co uses gis for telecommunications and municipal infrastructure mapping and data management. I am not involved in GIS development (I just run the company) this would be a great way for me to delve in. Dana ; )

4. No! Are you "the Man"?
If so IMPOSSIBLE!:silly:

OTH if you're the kind of small, responsible employer (Read decent wages, healthcare, etc...), trader of goods and commodities that a Leftist like myself can appreciate then fine.

:-)

10. Cool. I usually use it for urban planning projects.
I've only realized how powerful this shit is though. I won't say how really easy it is, don't want to scare the faint of heart, but you've got to know...

9. I'm no nutter, but I've had GIS training
Interesting software. It's becoming quite the thing in environmental/conservation biology circles.
