So it's not the thyroid...It's Anemia! |
|
Ok, for those not in the know, I thought I had an underactive thyroid and many DUers urged me to get to a doc. So I went and had my blood tests, and it's....iron-deficiency Anemia!! No suprise here, i get virtually no iron and eat a lot of things that block/inhibit absorption. So, it's time for a major health overhaul for me, as soon as exams are over this coming week.
Fwiw, here are my general test results:
Thyroid panel- All good! Lipid Panel- All good, cholesterol 164 Chem 12 Panel- All good! Liver and Kidneys a-ok! CBC- all good except for low hemoglobin and hematocrit.
It's funny, now that I've read up on the symptoms, mine match up with this even more than they did with the hypothyroidism. Especially my one bizarro habit, compulsive ice chewing, aka pica, which is a major indicator for an iron deficiency.
So thanks to all the helpful DUers out there! Y'all are the best! :grouphug:

Knowing nothing about your condition, it sounds like you may just have to have a diet change? Much better than taking medication all the time! I thought I had hypothyroidism until I went to the doctor a couple weeks ago and had tests done. Turns out I have cysts on my ovaries, which just plain sucks. :(

5. Getting out the cast iron pans as we speak |
|
They say cooking tomato sauce in an iron pan is good b/c the acid leaches iron out of it as it cooks. The Vitamin C in tomato sauce also helps the body absorb the iron, so it's a win-win!
