Can anyone recommend a good (cheap) vet in LA? |
|
I'm pissed at my vet for overcharging and I want to switch.
Either that - or does anyone know how to get an order of prednisone filled without a prescription? (any online and/or Canadian companies to recommend?)
I just think it's a bunch of crap that I have to have a whole list of tests run on my dog when she's been on this RX for over five years and nothing's gonna change. She'll be on it for life and several vets she's been to have concluded this. (She's already 11 y/o.)
I'm just really frustrated because I do NOT have the money to spend on bloodwork right now.

1. While I understand the need to save money myself, keep in mind |

that steroids are among the most potent and potentially dangerous drugs used in animals and humans on a long term basis. Despite the benefits when used correctly, long term use increases risk for conditions like hypoadrenalcorticism (Cushing's disease), infection, pancreatitis, and diabetes-- all which can be life threatening.
Careful monitoring is a necessity when used long term. Should you opt for "cheap" care that foregoes the blood work and close monitoring, you may well be putting your pet at risk.
Sometimes saving money actually "costs you" in the long run. Veterinarians, like physicians have a minimum of 8 years of education and usually an internship. Many also complete residency training. While you may be right about your previous vet overcharging, beware of opting for "shotgun" care when using these kind of medications. Sometimes a shot in the dark can be quite unfortunate in its consequences.

even the vet herself has stated that there are no other solutions and this is something she will be on for the rest of her life.

3. Have you discussed your concerns ($$) with the veterinarian? |
|
Perhaps they can do more limited blood testing or even extend the period in between after giving you some information on what to watch for in terms of warning signs?

I plan to do that when I take my dog in for her shots tomorrow. In fact, I'm planning to tell her that I'm switching vets if she doesn't come up with a more reasonable fee. This comes up every time I need a refill and I'm done with it.

4. Go to the corner of South Alameda and Santa Anna Blvd. |
|
Ask for Eddy. Tell him Chico sent you. Cash up front. No problems.

8. steroids are quite potent drugs |

They affect the liver and kidneys, as well as suppressing the body's immune response. Your vet is correct to keep tabs on your dog's organ function while on this medication, especially since she is 11 years old and a senior citizen. Maybe it's possible to extend the interval between tests, or to do a mini-panel instead of a full battery of tests? I usually try to test my patients who are on lifetime prednisone every 6 months or so. Please feel free to PM me if you need to. Good luck.

:hi: Our big guy Chester was on prednisone for years for his asthma, before he passed away in January at age (almost) 15.
We tried numerous times to take him off of it (with different vets overseeing us) and he almost died of an asthma attack. When I asked my friend, who is a holistic vet, she said that sometimes it's really the only alternative for some conditions.
So, if your dog really needs it, by all means, keep her on it, and good luck finding a vet who won't require tests more than once a year or so.
