Friends play Trading Faces at Bad Hair Day?
By Mary Ann Benyo
"It's a fun way to play with each other," said Drexel Davison, owner of Bad Hair Day? Salon in Rehoboth Beach. "Trading Faces allows you to bring a friend in and consult with our stylists about your friend's makeover. You can say, 'Give her bangs' or 'Get rid of that.' Of course," he said, "keep in mind that she will be in charge of your makeover in exchange."
Besides the professional cut, color and makeup session, each of the participants in the Trading Faces program will also receive a tote bag to commemorate the event. Before and after photos accompany a Bad Hair Day? T-shirt sporting the Trading Faces logo.
Davison added Trading Faces is not limited to girlfriends. Men also trade faces, it's a great mother-daughter experience and it might be fun to do with coworkers. However, on the afternoon of April 23, Trish Vernon, editor of the Cape Gazette in Lewes, traded faces with competing publisher Susan Lyons of the newly founded "Coastal Point" weekly newspaper that covers the Bethany-Fenwick area. As acquaintances in a common profession, but not really knowing much about the other's personal tastes, there was a bit of trepidation early on, especially on the part of Lyons, who will be attending her daughter's wedding in June.
"Not to worry," declared Business Director Wendy Rafferty, who helped to coordinate the scheduling. "They're gonna look really fabulous when they leave."
After the official before pictures, the two teams of stylists gathered around the women. Vernon was invited first to describe what she would like to change about Lyons. "Let's see. Bolder. More sophisticated. And highlights. More dimension. Like poofy there. Something really..." She tugged fistfuls of her own hair this way and that in her efforts to communicate her vision of "jazzier."
