BERLIN (Reuters) - A German court convicted a police sergeant with a fetish for women's handbags on 15 counts of theft and sentenced him to two and a half years in jail, a court in the eastern town of Gera said Wednesday.
A court spokesman said authorities were investigating some 1,000 additional cases of handbag theft over the last six years. The spokesman said a court physician who examined the man, 49, determined he had "progressive deviant sexual development."
"The defendant put his behavior down to sexual motivation," Gera court spokesman Philip Redeker told Reuters. Redeker said the police officer, who had been suspended, admitted he had an abnormal interest in handbags and their contents.
