1. What exactly is a screener?

14. A screener is a copy studios send out for private screenings

for critics, media, celebs, etc. Since they're generally a DVD rip or an analog in from the screener copy, the quality is much higher than a movie that was taped in a theatre with a camcorder.

During a lot of screeners you'll see copyright threats scrolling along the bottom of the screen.... not that I've ever downloaded one off the internet illegally, of course.

XviD.: a Video codec or encoding

SCREENER. : People who sneak in a camera to a theatre and film the movie being played. Also used to mean people who have access to (and steal because that is what it is) pre-release copies of DVDs (typically Academy award screeners)

-NOX : A group that releases stolen shit

.avi : A windows video format.

I don't know much about NOX, but I'm hoping this is a pre-release screen rather than a handheld. It's all for evaluation purposes anyhow, as I plan on seeing it in theatre (hopefully) several times.

16. i don't think screener applies to theater recordings

those are CAM (as in camcorder). There's also telesync, which I think is a camcorder that's also hooked into the theatre audio system... but I don't remember exactly

19. Yeah, you are probably right.

I'm not sure what the original meaning was, but at this point I have seen it used in both ways on the places like shareconnector. I typically only download really old or hard-to-rent stuff and just rent the current stuff or see it at the theater.
