When you were a kid, did you think adult life would be like this? |
|
Having responsibilities and bills and mortgages?
I thought being an adult would be this permanent vacation. "I'll grow up and things will be MUCH better". :-)

1. Sometimes I pay respect to little JCCyC's dreams |
|
like "now I can eat as much french fries I feel like!" or "now I can turn up the AC whenever the hell I see fit!" and savor this little moments.

3. No way. I never thought it would be like this. |
|
One of my first impressions of what adulthood would be like was that everyone would be responsible and intelligent when I grew up.
Not the case. Not even close.
Bills and mortgage bother me the least. But the intellectual dishonesty and cognitive dissonance of other adults is something that I never expected.

4. I like life as an adult better |
|
Yeah, the bills and crap are a downer but I was pretty screwed up as a teenager and much prefer life as a grown-up.
In fact, my life gets better as I get older so no regrets here.

I never had any conception that I'd be making the kind of money that I am today.

What's cool is pretty much everything adults told you when you were a kid is a lie.

Why do adults lie to kids so much? I think that's why my nieces and nephews like me so much... I don't lie to them, and they know it.

13. Things ARE Much Better for me NOW |
|
Growing up isn't all that much fun if you're not just like everyone else and they're all bigger, faster, and much better-coordinated than you.
I could at least take solace in the fact that the intellectual pursuits for which I have far more aptitude were likely to be more important in the long run for what I wanted to do (and have been doing) with my life.
But the Vietnam war and the draft threatened to undo all of that and put me in a place where the bullies are always right, brains matter not at all, and geeks go home in boxes. Making someone as clumsy as I was run through rice paddies shooting and throwing grenades would have been utterly daft, but the Army did that sort of thing every day, leading to thousands of "friendly fire" incidents.
I am also too old to be drafted now. The Vietnam war hung over my youth like a sword of Damocles. It was obviously a quagmire and yet we kept pouring in more troops. It looked as if it would never end. Fortunately, the draft did end before they could get me.

9. I'm 40 I keep wondering when I'm going to feel grown up. |
|
I always thought adults know everything, were sure of what they thought and what was real. I still don't feel that way.

10. For me Adult Life is much better than my Childhood |

Even through all this crap! Now that I've spent more than half my life as an adult, I still feel the same way. Not to say it doesn't suck. :)

12. I thought life would be worse |
|
I was moved around a lot as a kid and things weren't so stable with my parents and their marriage (always on and off). I didn't know what to expect really, but the way my parents were, I was in a real hurry to grow up. In such a hurry, I rather skipped much of a transitional period, but some of us had to super-responsible because mommy and daddy wouldn't help us to begin with, let alone if a mistake was made. Not whining, just life. I'm a stronger person because of that.

14. Not exactly like this but |
|
I knew there'd be a little more freedom from the repressed upbringing I had. Didn't envision a wife and kids, or that adult life would be this blah much of the time. I felt I was on my own for major decisions in life. No one gave me any useful assistance career wise, not even teachers.

In some ways, things are better. I have a closer relationship with my husband than I thought that I would. I am free from a lot of crap that I had to put up with a child. On the otherhand, I don't really have my act together yet. My house is a mess, I rarely send cards on holidays, I have not yet seriously decorated for holidays, I don't own a house, I don't have kids, we aren't involved in much in the community, we don't belong to a church, and we don't have much of a schedule except that I go to work when I am suppose to. My husband is hates organization and schedules so I suppose that is part of the problem. Still, I hope to get my act together in the next few years. I'm 26. I guess that it isn't too unusual for people our age to have issues with this.

Could act like a grownup in many ways but had few of the grownup responsibilities. Not to mention the excitement of being that age and having my whole life ahead of me to learn and explore.
