Who here can't stand the thought of someone not liking them?
I' actually recovered from this condition. All I had to do was realize "hey I'm a nice guy - they're the dickhead."

Since then, all is well.

Anyone suffer from this terrible affliction?

1. There is this ONE person who completely baffles me
He is SO rude to me, he works at the record store. I'm gonna complain to his manager, I think. It does bug me, because he doesn't even friggin know me, for Christ's sake.

30. Well, then I would understand why he didn't like me!
:D It's the people who don't know me who should all like me or at least be neutral, no? If I can't count on strangers for love and acceptance, then who??? :P

:D

10. That is how I feel. Who the hell cares.
I will say that people always said I was sort of like that. In my own world.

35. Same here ...
I used to care but I don't anymore. It's not even: "Well, I'm great, so if they don't like me then they're just a dickhead." It's that I just don't care anymore. It really *IS* great.

Its a very bad trait in a manager, and made me very ineffective.

4. I just lost a friend because
I hit reply all to her idiotic urban legend about aspartame. She wrote me a nasty note about how I had invaded her privacy, obviously expecting an apology. She didn't get it. Part of me regrets losing a friend, but I am not bothered enough to apologize or stop hitting reply all when I get this crap in my email.

6. as I got older
I finally decided this -

that I don't like everyone I meet

therefore; it's perfectly OK for people not to like me.

8. Well said
I don't expect everyone to like me, however try to treat the people I don't like with respect, and I like to be treated with the same courtesy.

21. I'm Kinda Like That
Instead of starting out liking people, only to regret it later, I assume the worst up front.

You find some very nice surprises.

7. It's a nasty condition.
I still am incredulous when someone is nasty to me for no reason I can discern (What? Why not? Why don't you like me? What did I do?) and have, too many times, bent over backwards and been generous and defended them to others.

When I don't much care for them either. I am old enough to know better, but it's still something I'm working on. Congrats on your recovery.

9. anyone who doesn't follow the herd
has enemies -- this is what separates the free spirits from the cattle...

if there are people who don't like you, you must be doing something right

acceptance from others is a tricky thing - by nature, all humans want it, yet it can be very confining & self-defeating

11. Well, sure, I'd like it better if everyone found me charming,
irresistable, attractive, intelligent, and likeable...but that isn't reality, and I decided some years ago that if they don't see my good qualities and/or don't like me despite (or because of) them, then fuck 'em, who needs 'em? They're obviously persons of no refinement or discernment. ;-)

12. Yeah, I used to be like that somewhat
Edited on Fri May-21-04 06:12 PM by gristy
As I got older, I think two things happened. One, I cared less if someone didn't like me. And two (and this is the interesting part), I think I've become a more principled and confident individual, and people might like me more because of it. At least they don't mess with me as much.

Good question!

13. Not anymore
I'm a polite, person who is easy to get along with. If someone can't do that, they are obviously the one with the problem, not me. Therefore, any energy spent on them simply isn't worth it.

I must admit that I have to make an effort to let it not bother me. I usually succeed.
