I have been fascinated with them since seeing them on nature shows when I was a kid.
We have a troop here at the SF Zoo and I have literally spent hours watching them do their meerkat thing. :) They are ridiculously cute and charming creatures.
I have some great pictures of them belly basking in the sun, standing guard for predators, and sacked out for the afternoon nap.

4. Never even knew about them... |
|
until I saw "The Lion King" (I know, shame)... Saw a National Geographic show about them, they are quite amazing and fascinating little animals! Quite complex social groups, the way they take turns doing "sentry duty" (like the one in your post) is uncanny...

6. Yes, they are fascinating |
|
I was at the zoo in Sydney earlier this year and came across the meercat enclosure. I spent close to two hours watching them, I was so fascinated by their behavior.
It seemed that one would be on guard for a while and then be relieved by another.
Just amazing.

5. David Attenbrough had them perching on him to keep look out |
|
When he did a show about them on his "Life of Mammals" series. One of the best DVD collections out there if you love good wildlife photography - the Beeb at its best.
