Dogs in the road problem! Any experts out there? |
|
This past week my dogs have developed a bad habit. They have been waiting for me to get home in the middle of the road. I have six "farm dogs" and I allow them to be dogs and roam the farm. My house is at least 200 yards from the road. The road is a one lane blacktop country lane with very little traffic. I may see 2 cars an hour. The place the mutts hang out at is on a sharp curve so people do have to slow it down (blind curve). What would be the best way to modify their behavior and keep them off the road? I will not put them in a cage or keep them tied up because if I were a dog I wouldn't enjoy that kind of life. I don't think the "electric fence" option is feasible because I just want to restrict them from the road. Is there anything I can apply to the road to discourage them? A certain smell or something that makes them uncomfortable?

1. Perhaps you could enlist some friends in... |

squirting them down with those (higher pressure) water guns from the windows of the cars (the ones that the neighbor kids undoubtedly own)... If water won't do it, you could try dilute lemon juice or vinegar but just getting sprayed would probably be enough of a deterrent, especially if it came from several different cars...
But, I'd hate to see you regret letting them roam.... I remember some very rural gravel roads with no traffic that (on occasion) would be a tempting speeding zone for teens, particularly those who had been drinking.... Beware, for your pup's sakes.

get them an electronic collar and use it when they get to a certain spot. They work pretty good.
