Poll question: Computer Gamers: Has the move to "real time" in all game forms....
Edited on Sat May-22-04 08:56 PM by khephra
Pissed you off? I miss turn games
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

much.

RPG? Real time. Sims? Real time.

Frigging card games? Real time.

I'm starting the Turn-Based Liberation Front, not to be confused with The Front for The Liberation of Turn-Based Games.

Which do you like the most?

1. Been playing
Age of Wonders - Shadow Magic.

It's a really nice game. Takes me back to the good ol' days.

2. Having the eye-hand co-ordination of a grape, I'm not really real-time
oriented. Then again, my computer is 3-odd years out of date, so new developments in computer gaming pretty much bypass me anyway.

24. Yeah, somebody, possibly you, posted this before
and I got an old Koei favorite, Uncharted Waters II: New Horizons off of it. Not quite as exciting as when it was on Nintendo, but still fun.

3. i like both..
it depends on the genre, but i enjoyed wizardry 8 because it had turn based fighting that was really well executed. i miss the AD&D gold box games i used to play on my amiga.. horrible graphics, great gameplay.

6. Did you play Temple of Elemental Evil?
It was buggy as hell, but after the patch it was a nice turn-based game similar to the gold box games.

9. I like both - try Sacred for a good real time RPG

lots of bugs, but over 300 quests.

Morrowind also makes a good arguement for real-time.

10. Morrowind was pretty good!
I'd like to try Gothic 2. It's supposed to be similar to Morrowind.

14. Gothic (I +II)is pretty good
Edited on Sun May-23-04 05:02 AM by Kellanved
However I have to warn you: the Gothic games were developed for the German market.
Few German games made for the domestic market are considered especially good by international Gamers. (Realms of Aventuria I - III, Settlers I-IV, Archimedian Dynasty, Sacred, Gothic I- II, Anno, Battle Isle, ...)

In the case of Gothic II:
-outdated Graphics (the Game isn't exactly new)
-some bugs
-cheesy story
-slow start
-game world is far smaller than Morrowind's
-3rd Person
-...

I found both Gothic games highly enjoyable (the 2nd with the expansion pack), but I would not have bought them full price.

22. Oh, there are plenty of great real-time games
which I've actually enjoyed, I just miss the ability to sit back and think about my actions in games.

25. I'm playing Sacred now

and really enjoying it. Divine Divinity is a bit old, but that's next on my list. I have been playing Dragonfire on my Palm, which is turn-based, but pretty old-looking. Not to say it doesn't have a delightful nostalgic charm...

13. With very few exceptions RTS's do little for me
I love FPS's so that kind of counts as real-time.But I haven't played an RTS a lot since Starcraft.

One of my fav games blends both turn based and real time though. The Combat Mission games let you choose your orders for all your units, then you click on the "go" button and for one minute you watch your orders followed (or not sometimes as morale factors in and the troops dont like stupid orders). It's a great mix because once you hit that go button you're helpless for that minute if something goes wrong (like a Panzerfaust unit waiting for your tacky Sherman tank to come bumbling along).

Other than that though I love turn based games almost exclusively these days.

15. I miss game design. Like movies, it's all production values these days
Edited on Sun May-23-04 06:25 AM by jpgray
It's more about 'how can we program this amazing new 3d photo-realistic graphic engine' than about 'how can we design a fun game?'

Case in point, Pirates! is an immensely enjoyable 'real time' game. :D

27. Yeah! it's like Tao Fang: Fist of the Lotus (Or something like that.)
WE NEED GAMES WITH GOOD BACKGROUND AND SIDE QUESTS!!!! NOT JUST PRETT PICTURES AND GRAPHICS!!!!! Why can't they make something like DOA 3? Good graphics AND good fighting system?

I love the massive fleet battles you can have in that game. Sometimes a single engagement can last ten or twelve hours, one turn at a time!

28. Fallout is a great CRPG
But for ALL-TIME turn based awesomeness you have to look no further than X-COM.
