Saw "Troy" today...my impressions for you all...
Edited on Sat May-22-04 09:47 PM by m-jean03
First of all... There is A LOT OF FIGHTING...it goes on and on and on and on...

THE MUSIC is very good.

THE MEN are very brawny.

THE WOMEN are hot.

Did I mention there is a LOT of fighting? :boring:

Brad Pitt makes an odd, some would say unlikely, Achilles.

I give it a B- or a C+. What did y'all think?

2. Ha! Hadn't thought of that! Yes...
Yes, I would. Russell Crowe, in my feeling, would have played the role much better.

3. Ok, this might sound like a geek question...
Is it historically/mythologically accurate?

4. Well, take into consideration I was truant half the time in high school
when I should have been learning my ancient history, and I haven't taken it upon myself to read much about it since.

That said, from what I know it is pretty accurate to the story as told in the Iliad, but condensed timewise and simplified somewhat for the big screen.

Yet the film did seem like grandiose, violent fluff to some extent.

Maybe a better historian than I would have more insight on this?

6. Hah! The war took 10 years. The movie lasted maybe a month?

7. Well, about 2 hours actually
though at times it felt like a month... :boring: :-)

That's what I said to ES -- should have said it was condensed MAJORLY,though- not just somewhat, to fit on the big screen. 10 years, huh? I didn't know it was that long.

Time to go get myself some ancient history I think.

8. Oh dear
And I thought this movie titled "Troy" was all about a former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. :eyes:

I'm glad I didn't go to see it today then. :silly:

9. I studied the Iliad
freshman year.
It's good to have a guide to that story.
It did take place over 10 years or so.
Some of the bare bones story lines are in the
movie, Achilles holed up on the beach is one.
I don't remember the love interest with the
babe.
The movie has so many moments with
Brad Pitt sort of looking off into space,
real hollywood wistful like, it was almost
a parody of Charlton Heston.
This movie wanted to be "Gladiator", but
comes off more like a throw back to
"Spartacus" or "The 500 Spartans"...
50's sword and sandal flics.
Homer's poetry has a spare, harsh,
quality, that is kind of lost in the movie's
CB deMille kind of thing.
