except for emergencies or unless you pay off your whole bill each month, in which case you might as well use a debit card.
The "cash back" doesn't begin to cover the interest you pay, especially if you spread payments out over a long period.
Interest rates on consumer credit cards are so high that they can easily keep you paying for stuff that you are no longer using. But that's the point.
The faster you pay off a debt, the less you end up paying in the long run, and the more cash you free up for savings and investment.
I am currently on a plan to eliminate all my debts in a couple of years, which means that I couldn't go to Japan this year as I had wanted, but in the long run, it will be worth it.

... which we do. You develop a good credit rating that you can't get using debit cards, and, if you have a cash back or membership card (such as REI), you end up with several hundred dollars of free shopping at the end of the year.
