Convicted Bus Driver Must Watch Surgery As Punishment
<snip>

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) - An Argentine bus driver must watch surgery being performed on a traffic accident victim as part of his punishment for striking and killing an 11-year-old boy, a judge said on Friday.

"This is an important legal warning to people who violate transit laws," said Judge Cesar Raul Jimenez of the northern province of Misiones, calling the unusual sentence an "educational measure."

Ramon Rodriguez Dos Santos, 44, was convicted of manslaughter after his bus collided with the child on a scooter.

The judge also barred him from driving for five years and gave him a two-year suspended prison sentence.

1. I'm always interested in such unique punishments
And would be interested in knowing their deterrent effects.

3. I heard of one a few years ago...
Supposedly some small town started punishing people who violated the "noise ordinance" (i.e., blasting their car stereo so loud you could hear it several blocks away) were forced to sit in a cell for a day and listen to music from the children's show "Barney" (the purple dinosaur).

They claimed they never had a repeat offender.....

:shrug:
