DU Teachers: GPA question
Ok, my cumulative GPA before this semester was 4.0. I took 4 classes this semester, and the grades (which I haven't received yet) should be:

Chem 112 4 cr. A
Math 107 4 cr. A-
Pol 105 3 cr. A
Self-Def 2 cr. A

My question is, how greatly will the A- affect my cumulative GPA? I'll be transferrring after next year, so I want to keep it as high as possible.

1. We didn't have A- in my college...
is it a 3.75?

How many credit hours did you have before this semester cumulative?

4. It depends on how many hours you have so far...
an A- should be 3.667, and no, it wont hurt your gpa much, if you make 4 hours of A+, youll be back to a 4.0

6. not all systems award A+....
Edited on Wed May-26-04 03:38 PM by mike_c
The university where I work does not, for example. In any event, if the point scale tops out at 4.0 (as is normal), then it's impossible to regain a 4.0 cumulative GPA if you've gotten any grade less than a 4.0, whatever you call it. As the cumulative number of points increases, the effect of one or two slightly lower scores diminishes to negligible, but it can't ever be "erased" or "compensated" unless you somehow manage a grade higher than 4.0.

7. Well, shit, thats unfair....
If your gonna have an A that counts <4.0, you need an A that counts >4.0

8. Well, by my math:
If you do 120 hours of college and only have that one A- for 4 hours (the rest A) youd have a GPA of 3.988, so it works out to be a .012 drop

9. If you are transferring, it may not make any difference
At the university where I work, transfer GPA is not considered, except as an admission criterion. Especially if it is from a community college. Only your work at this school is listed on your degree audit. It may make a difference when and if you apply to graduate school, but GPA is only one factor, along with GRE (or other appropriate exam), personal statement, faculty recommendations, and research experience.

10. quit worrying about your grades. drink beer. smoke weed. get laid.
unless you're going to grad/med/law/more school. then your GPA actually matters.

otherwise... it's just for your ego. have some fun instead.

12. sorry, no.
I'm an older student, far out of my partying phase. School is my absolute first priority in life and I am determined to do as well as I possibly can.

I do like to smoke the reefer though... :smoke:

13. I hate math
It was an Algebra course, and it took everything I had to get that A-. Math just is not my forte in life. I'm much better at writing papers, so it's good that I'm a PoliSci major. :P
