Durian. Love it or hate it (most westerners hate it)?
Durian is a tropical fruit that smells like vomit. That makes it easy to find a durian stand in Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. Raw durian has some toxic qualities (from my jungle survival training at Clark, AFB, in 1970). Mainly, it might raise the body temperature a degree or two. But cooked in a custard or an ice cream, it is sublime.

1. I love it - once I learned to get past the smell while fresh
I tried to drink a soda with durian in it once, and it tasted like dirt. But I LOVE durian custard! YUMMM!

3. Someone I know described the smell as that of a...
...White Castle cheeseburger. But that's cool with me, though I've never had it.

4. Could never get past that prickly part
But I have had it in some kind of dessert, long ago -- I remember that it was pretty good. I mean, not chocolate, but what is?

My question is...who was the first person who decided that eating this prickly hand grenade of doom would be a good idea?

5. A hungry person.
That's why it was introduced to us - potential shoot-downs in Laos - at the Clark AFB Jungle Survival School.

8. The Singapore subway system bans durians

So, don't dare to carry a durian on the subway in Singapore. Could get you caned, at Chaingi Prison, like Michael Fay.

9. Brazil has something very similar called jaca.
It smells like diarrhea. Once I was at some friend's house and I could SWEAR their toilet was overflowing. It wasn't -- there was a plate wit pieces of jaca that people were very naturally eating. EWWWWWW! :puke:

Here are the nasty things. Some of those are as big as two basketballs put together.
