The Stone Roses
Edited on Wed May-26-04 10:07 PM by liberalpragmatist
What d'you all think of the group?

As for me, I only recently got their self-titled first album, which I've been told, is a must-have. So far, to be honest, my reaction is mixed. The songs are beautiful, with great beats. The vocal sort of resembles, to me at least, the Strokes, in that the lead is buried relatively deep within the mix - something that I don't usually like. The main thing for me right now is that all the songs mesh together in my head - they're all very similar. So I can't say I've been overwhelmed, but it does sound better with each listen - maybe in a week I'll be gaga over them. Right now my favorite song is Elephant's Stone.

What about you?

1. First album is great, second less so, but better than its reputation.

As far as singles go, What the World is Waiting For, Elephant Stone, Made of Stone, Fools Gold, One Love, Sally Cinnamon, Ten Story Love Song and Begging You were the classics. Lazy bastards, though. Took them five years to make their second record.

7. Wasn't the album from 1989?
Does that qualify as '90s now? Or was it released later in the United States?

I think it was released in Jul of 89 in the UK and did not become a hit until December/early January

5. She Bangs The Drums
is one of the tightest damn pop songs ever, and the jam at the end of I Am The Resurrection is pure bliss distilled into vinyl.

Yeah, I like that record a lot.

6. AMAZING Band
I wish they would get more credit in the US than they do. They helped to change the face of British rock music and helped to foster in some of the great bands of the 90s that came with the "Britpop" explosion (Liam Gallagher pretty much ripped Ian Brown's vocal style.) John Squier is probably one of the most underrated and most inventive guitarists in the world today. Just listen to tracks like Begging You to hear some weird ass guitarisms. Great rhythm section too with an obvious dance music influence. Also one of the few bands that have B-sides just as good as their A-sides. Their is a collection called The Complete Stone Roses that has all their singles and B-sides on one album. Cuts out the killer guitar solos from I Am The Resurrection but if you have the selftitled album that's not a big deal. Just an all around amazing band. Too bad they burned themselves out and blew it. Second Coming is decent at least.

10. I discovered the stone rose about three years ago,
forever after they broke up

I love I am the resurrection.

I also really like she bangs the drum.

They were super underrated.

I went to Manchester in 2001 and tried to imagine what it all must have been like.

I recommend the movie "24 hour party people" which is all about the manchester scene.

I'll have to check out that movie.

I dug out a Happy Mondays CD last week and had a fun time.

12. It was real different for the time.
Now you still have bands that sound a little like them, but for them to be doing a bunch of mid-sixties Revolver-esque music in the late eighties was different, and I think that's where a big chunk of their importance comes from.
