Delivery People Urged to Rat Out Minors
Edited on Thu May-27-04 08:25 AM by Champ
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - The long arm of the law may be ringing your doorbell and holding a pizza.

Police in Portsmouth hope to enlist pizza delivery people and hotel clerks to help cut into underage drinking and parents who allow it.

Under a new law, it's illegal for the owner or occupants of a home or hotel room to host a gathering of five or more minors who are drinking or using drugs. Teens as young as 17 who throw a party could be tried as adults.

Portsmouth Police Sergeant Mike Schwartz said the program is called the "Booze Bounty." He said food delivery people and hotel clerks would receive $50 if their anonymous tips of suspicious activity leads to the arrest of a party host.

It's to some sort of wedding story...

Yikes. Man, are we uptight in this country, or what. Watch out, and don't buy pizza :eyes:

5. I have a suggestion
Let's use teens to rat out cops, district attorneys, and judges who are drunk, who try to shake them down for sex, or who are religious maniacs!

Then we could use the teens to rat their parents out for drug use, cheating on taxes, evading the law in any capacity, abusing them or other children, and engaging in adultery.

9. New Hampshire in general
has a lax government, except in the area of underage drinking.

They have no sales or income tax,
no seatbelt law (there is a law for minors though),
there are maybe 2 cops on the highways at any time,
its really easy to register to vote,
you can still smoke in restaurants.

But if you try to buy alcohol, oh man...

The state has a self-imposed monopoly on the sale of hard liquor, they sell them at state owned liquor stores (some of which are on the highway - figure that one out).

If you have someone at the counter with you when you buy alcohol, the law requires that THAT person show his/her ID as well, before they can sell to you.

They tried to pass a law that defines having alcohol in your system as "possession," for purposes of underage drinking.

Live Free or Die...

join the marching band, even if you don't play an instrument, they are a great bunch of people.

If you dont play any instrument, they'll give you an empty beer keg to play, or a kazoo.

10. Does anyone see the dangerous side of this?
So instead of calling for delivery, minors who have been drinking would be likely to get in their cars and pick up a pizza somewhere......

12. well
thats not dangerous. Because the Gestapo can use those instances as further proof of why 20 year olds shouldnt drink. :eyes:

Its the same idea as with cabs refusing to give rides to drunken minors. Let them get in more accidents so you can further justify the ban on alcohol for them.

17. i havent heard of it from regular mainstream cab companies,
but some companies specialize in giving impaired people free rides home form bars. There are some of THOSE companies who will not give rides to drunken minors. The point of the service is to reduce drunk driving.

33. This is BADLY thought out
$50 for each SUCCESSFUL tip, huh?

Food delivery people are usually dirt-poor and young. They make almost no money, for which they have to use their car, which makes them much more liable to have an accident. Then, too, they are prime targets for robberies. And a sometimes, the people to whom you deliver hassle you, cheat you out of money, and infrequently assault you. It's a dangerous, boring, low-pay job.

So the delivery people will often be delivering to their buddies out of high school or college. Who's going to rat out their friends? But ratting out the rich and disdainful folks will become much more common, and it will be a point of pride among the fast-food set.

I guarantee, the first time some rich kid with a hair-trigger-temper father is snitched on, the program ends.

34. That is so f***ing stupid
As the stepparent of teenagers, let me just say we'd much rather they had a couple of beers at home where we know they aren't driving or causing other people problems than if they were out getting shitfaced somewhere they might be tempted to drive.

Not that we'd ever actually allow them to drink, Herr Aschkrofft.

35. If they're 17 and tried as adults for underage drinking...
That doesn't make much sense.

Adults cannot get in trouble for underage drinking, they can get in trouble for supplying alcohol to those underage, but they, themselves are not guilty of underage drinking.

So...

Try the 17 year olds as adults for a crime that adults are not capable of committing.

Right. That's just really dumb anyway, I can understand their concern for something like this, but they way they are going about executing their plan is ridiculous.
