Your Favorite Album No Ones Else Knows
We all have a CD (or LP or tape) we bought somewhere, maybe at a concert, maybe at a yard sale or a concert, that just blows us away. When we talk about to others, they look uncomfortable and find reasons to move away from us. That's why we are the elite and they are Philistine pagans.

Please list your qualifying album and where you got it.

Mine is "Live at the Gate of Horn" by Gibson and Camp, a folk album. I downloaded it after reading a biography of Phil Ochs, who worked with Bob Gibson before coming to NYC.

32. Not The Kind Of Thing. . .
. . .that comes up in normal conversation. I bought the first album in about 1974 or so. Had about 5 of their albums. Then followed Nelson's solo career. Kind of lost touch, though, around the late 90's. I think he's still recording on the label owned by Fripp, Belew, et al. (Sorry, can't think of the name of it right now.) He's on a label compilation disc called "Sometimes God Smiles" at least two songs.

35. 76% Uncertain, 'Hunka Hunka Burnin' Log"
Unless you were involved with the Connecticut hardcore scene of the late 80's, you have NO idea who 76% Uncertain were. They stretched the boundaries of hardcore, using three guitars playing harmony lines, almost choral vocal harmonies, semi-prog song structures, and a goofy sense of humor.

Probably my favorite album of all time.

An album by a band called The Bears, composed of a trio of Cincinnati musicians who also played as psychodots, and Adrian Belew.

They did three albums, and have toured as The Bears in recent years, but nothing of theirs ever really 'did it' for me like "Rise And Shine". It's been out of print for a decade, I don't know if they'll ever reissue it or press it on CD. Possibly, since they occasionally still record as The Bears.

74. You're not the only one
I've been a big GCD fan since "Bi-ig Man" and their single of Kumbaya.

A snowstorm hit Philly when they were playing once; only half a dozen people showed up for the gig. I had the wonderful opportunity of hanging out with them, and spent half the night chatting with Murray and Rhett about gnosticism and the revival of "Southern Gothic" literature.

Great buncha guys, all of 'em.

78. Hey,that was my pick too!
If you haven't gotten the lyrics I strongly advise actually purchasing the CD (not a thing I advise lightly). It has the lyrics, and when you read along with the music your head will explode at the coolness of it all.She really is saying things and not just barking :)

The things that guy does with his guitar blow me away.I've been listening to music for 30 years and he's doing some things I've never heard before.

I would definately consider them the best punk band going right now."Charlie" and "Teeny Shiny" are great to.

Needless to say,I approve of your fine taste :D

69. David Lynn Jones - Mixed Emotions
There's a s/s from Bexar, AR called Davd Lynn Jones who made 4 incredible albums in 1988-1994. Somewhere between country & rock, he never caught on like Earle, but I have all four of them and they are just great. the best of the bunch is 1992's Mixed Emotions, a collection nearly the equal of Copperhead Road - some rock & roll, a couple country songs, and two very opinionated tunes about Gulf War I. Listening to Jones is like going to church.

BTW, I have "Live At The Gate Of Horn" as well. That too is a fine album. I am a big fan of Mr. Gibson's. Saw him several times in concert (I have lived in the Chicago area almost my entire 47 years). He left us way too soon.

76. Richard Buckner..."Since"....
Thiss album owes alot to the session folkls supporting Buckner. But its a real classic if you are into the alt.country or retro folk-rock sound.

Some real gems on this baby...like Jewelbomb and The Ocean Cliff Clearing and Brief and Boundless and the very Ralph Stanlyeseque The Night Will Bury You......

77. 28th Day
An eponymous album. I think it was the only one they put out. It has been re-released on CD with some of their singles.

Barbara Manning came from that band -- it also morphed into The Downsiders.

Cole Marquis was, at one time, one of my roommates when I lived out west. Much as I like pimping for my friends' projects, this one is a slam-dunk. It was one of the best albums of its time, period, and producer Russ Tolman continues to get pats on the back for it. Cole is a brilliant guy, and he was into performing both improvisational comedy and music. Music eventually commanded more of his attention. He learned to play guitar faster than anyone I've ever known, progressing from fumbling through chord charts to guitar-wizard level in about two years, which is even faster than my brother did.

Do yourself a favor and get the album. 20 years of musical history haven't put a dent in it -- it still sounds like today's nightmares, hopes, and struggles bound up and transmuted into a series of songs.

84. kim richey, self named album.
heard "every river" from it first on the World Cafe public radio show as i was driving thru west texas after a week running bleaching trials at a big textile factory.

i stopped the car as soon as the song ended on as flat a stretch of land as God ever made just to get my briefcase out of the trunk so i could grab pen and paper to write down the name and artist of the song.

i met her the next year in charlotte at the hotel where we both staying when she was to appear at the double door and gave her one of my tie dyed shirts which she wore for the show.

great album, with the very best session players in nashville backing her up.

91. Bachman-Turner-Bachman (as "Brave Belt" with Chad Allen)
Sort of a precursor to BTO and The Guess Who

Had some really great songs - sort of mellow, a little closer to the style of the Guess Who than BTO.

I think they only made one album, a few years back. But it's awesome!

Oops, edited because I forgot to say where I got it:
My brother-in-law is a bigwig at that recording company and he gave it to us along with some other demos.
